I am seriously thinking of purchasing a Canon SD1000 so that I can have a seriously compact camera and still have an optical view finder when I need it. I am interested in hearing opinions about this camera from those that own one.
Thanks.
One of the reason I chose the SD850 over the SD870 was that the 850 has an optical viewfinder. I am disappointed with the viewfinder, as a result I do not use. it.

I've never used the viewfinders on any of the compact Canon powershots that I've owned. The viewfinder on the SD1000 is tiny (like the other models in the SD line) but I guess you could use it.
But I love my SD1000 since it's so small, thin and light. I think you'd be happy with it. If you want to use the viewfinder to save battery life, why not just get some extra batteries? I got two generic NB-4L's on eBay for $6.98 and another two for about $10 (gave 2 to my brother).
It does a great job for being so small. Although I usually grab my SD700IS more often when I go places. The SD1000 is a perfect club/bar/party camera to drop in your jeans when you're heading out the door.

I use the view finder on my SD800 (and previously my SD300) exclusively, I never use the LCD. If you can spring for a few more dollars, the SD850 is slightly nicer but the SD1000 is a good cheap ultracompact.

Thanks for the comments. I did purchase the SD1000 yesterday. So far I have just been experimenting with it but it promises to be a fun little camera to keep in my pocket.
Happy New Year to all of you!

I recently purchase the SD 1000 (from DELL, $175.00 dekivered) to use as a pocket carry, always available camera. I also have a S3IS which is perfect for my level of knowledge 7 needs. I am very pleased with the SD!
