We've just bought D80, and Canon HV20 camcorder.
Looking for software for editing still photos and video.
Currently have use only Picasa for still photo editing.
D80 came w/ cd for Picture Project 1.7

Costco has for $99.99 after $20 Rebate combo of:
-CorelŽ Paint Shop ProŽ X2
-UleadŽ VideoStudioŽ 11 Bundle (apparently well liked by

Alternatively another popular video editing program is Sony Vegas.

Any recs WRT software for editing photos from the D80? (and the whole picture here)?

I'm thinking the combo from Costco might be a good buy....

For photo editing(since this is a Camera site) I would suggest Nikon Capture NX. Its the best photo editing software for Nikon images. Alternatives are Adobe Lightroom, Adobe Elements, Adobe PhotoShop, Paintshop, CaptureOne, ACDSEE Pro and I am sure I am leaving some other software out.

My top 3 suggestions would be Capture NX, Photoshop, Lightroom. Capture NX is the cheaper of the 3.

Keep in mind you may want to try trials so you can see which software will fill your editing needs as some offer more advanced tools that others dont have.

EDIT** Forgot to mention, Ulead produces great software, I have used their DVD Factory for producing DVDs.

Got a Nikon Capture NX cd w/ the D80:Free trial for 30 days only though.
So many options....

Give it a try, I am confident that you will like it. If you do like it, let me know I have a $30 off Capture NX code that Nikon emailed to me for Christmas. It expires on Jan. 6th, so let me know. :)

Thanks,
How much does it typically cost?
Any limitations in how well does the software work w/ other cameras?

I believe the normal price is $150.

Yes it works with other cameras JPEG files, I am not sure about other RAW files, though.

The D80 is the only camera we have that shoots RAW

Anyone know if there's any benefit for staying w/ the same company for both video and still photo editing? eg Corel does both (Paintshop, Video Studio).

Most of the software mentioned already (Capture NX, Lightroom, Photoshop, etc) is purely for still photos.
I would not worry about whether the still photo and video software was from the same manufacturer as they are designed for different things. I'd just try to find the best of each within the limitations of how much you want to spend and what your expectations are.

I just posted on another thread, you started off the same topic. Not much of a read, but it is on your other thread.

Thanks for your help.
Am liking the Nikon series: Transfer/CaptureNX/ViewNX.
If only Nikon had made it more easily evident that you actually need to separately download Transfer and ViewNX for a complete package.

Link to a helpful thread:

Thanks to everybody here. I'll happily play w/ the Nikon software for a while.
