The camera was on and the lens auto extends when it is on. I turned it off and attempted to turn it back on. The auto lens cover is stuck open and the lens extension will not even make noise as if it wants to extend. It auto shuts down after a few seconds of being on. Can someone give me an idea of repair diagnosis and maybe round about cost. There is only one repair company in my city and I am afraid the may take the cost of a new one and subtract a hundred for a repair estimate. Thanks in advance for replies.

I have no good estimate for the repair. However, I have not seen many digital camera (or even regular camera) repairs that came in under $200.

Not for a Penatax Optio... If it was a 1Ds it might be a different story.
Now, if it were me, it's just a good excuse to look at dSLRs. ;)

I'm not sure of the advantages of a DSLR. Isn't it larger than the Pentax? I really like that the Pentax fits in my pants pocket.
I think the advantage is the same as using an SLR over a 35mm compact. Having said that, there's a place for both.
EXACTLY the same thing happened to me with my Optio SV. Dropped it from waist height on a hollow wooden floor and the lens stays extended and switches on, but does not work. Must be a fragile range of camera's.
I am getting it repaired in Hong Kong ofr USD$ 172.00!! Worth it? I'm not sure really, but its the best way to minimise my loses
