I am looking at the Canon POWERSHOT SD870 IS and the Canon POWERSHOT SD850 IS? I mostly take pictures of the family, both indoor and out.

I am looking at the Canon POWERSHOT SD870 IS and the Canon POWERSHOT SD850 IS? I mostly take pictures of the family, both indoor and out. There are two main differences between these cameras:

The SD870 IS has a lens that features a wider angle of view but shorter telephoto reach...28-105mm (35mm equiv.). The lens on the SD850 IS has a range of 35-140mm, so you lose on the wide end but gain on the telephoto end.

Also the SD870 IS has a larger LCD but does not have an optical viewfinder (something that is very handy to have in bright sunlight which tends to wash out the LCD). The SD850 IS does have an optical viewfinder.

The lens on the 850 is sharper then the lens on the 870 (and the 800). If you don't need the wide angle then the 850 is a better camera.
