Well, it's 1PM ... CST in Chicago ... and no snow, yet. We got sprayed on the 1st, with ice, no less ... then it was gone!

But, I do mean, yet ... they are talking a serious change in mere hours, here. "Rush hour" should be another fine mess.

Okay ... here's the "B4" - at 1PM
31326

3PM - Two whole flakes in the air
31327

4:15PM - That's not noise, folks. The flash caught it, mid-flight ... it's a comin'

Taken with my old Olympus C-3020 (which hides in my car)

Back around 5PM ... CYA

Wow crazy how a little distance can change things! :p

I love snow! I'm really happy we got it early this year.

I'm going to work on my snow pics a little see if it can inspire me a little.

nqjudo:

Thanks and ya, some days I'll toast it up. I like to keep my sandwiches guessing. :p It sure is nice being able to go home for lunch!

I just heard on the radio..... it cost 3 million dollars to remove the snow from the snow storm we just had!!!

We got a little bit of snow last Sunday. It's all gone now.

I wish we would get some snow that would stick. this time of year it all gets dumped on Chi-town and the storm has lost it's fluff before it gets down to Cincinnati.. all we get is miserable rain and the occasional flurry that melts away as soon as it touches ground.

Enjoy your snow everyone and be safe.

We get snow.. and plenty of it: http://farm1.static.flickr.com/186/392740551_852756d498.jpg

Just sadly, it normally doesn't come until late January. So we have a little while to wait. I too would hate to live in a place that never gets snow.. i guess getting it for only a month or two is better than never getting any.

Thank you! and yes it's an S3 shot.I really can't wait for more snow to see what this 40D can do with it... Right now i'm at a loss, i normally shoot spiders and they're all hiding away for winter. It's too late in fall for pretty trees (all the leaves are gone here) no birds here either... so i have to wait till christmas to get anything i'm interested in to shoot!

Here in Victoria we usually don't get any snow until the new year. Last 4 years we got one day of snow and it was between January 7th and end of March. It's very weird being here with no snow:( Anyways so when they called for snow this past weekend we laughed.........

Here is my condo view, Victoria got a very light sprinkling
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2399/2086732011_6dfc2ceccc.jpg

Then we decided to drive up island and see some friends. All these pics were taken on the Malahat(major highway leaving Victoria) We were 20 mins from our house when we hit this snow storm. We loved it since we love the snow

This was coming home to Victoria the next day...

Crappy part was once we left the highway the snow vanished and the rain came. Its amazing the difference in weather due to elevation:)

31334
SONY α700 w/ T17-50mm f/2.8 @ 17mm - f/2.8 - 1/8 sec. - ISO-3200 - Handheld

... which is surprising less than they predicted. It's a wet snow ... sticking to everything ... but, I'm cool with that ... as long as it doesn't get any deeper. :D

That kind of weird light cast coming from the left is O'Hare Airport's and the Expressway lamps, coupled with the streetlight.

Oh man, looking at this reminds me ... I have to put the AC covers on the RV. "Doh!"

downtrodden
12-04-2007, 09:48 PM
Don, no offense intended toward you- but i HATE O'hare airport. I will never fly through there again. I'd rather pay more for my ticket than have a layover in O'hare.

We were scheduled to have snow start falling at 7... here it is almost 1am- and not even a flurry.. or cloud... damn.

DonSchap
12-04-2007, 10:04 PM
Hey, I'll be honest with you ... the convenience of having that one of the world's busiest airports near the house is just insane. I can have someone fly in, they can call me as they just get off the jet and I can pick them up by the time they hit the sidewalk, at Arrivals, without have to "orbit" the place. Hell, the planes are so low, I can wave to the arrivals as they go over. Then, ten minutes later ... back in the driveway, unloading. Not only that, but the CTA (Chicago's Transit Authority) connects right there, at the airport ... and there's a stop a few minutes further down, too, for better parking ... and that route's straight into the heart of downtown Chicago.

I snapped this, about 15-months ago, with the EOS 20D.

31347

It's looking south, across Lake Opeka, at O'Hare. It was a low-overcast night and you can see the eerie light cast to the place with those Sodium-Vapor lamps on the I-90 Tollway. Also, it was a 25-second, handheld shot (okay ... just kidding ... handholding a EOS 20D? Hah!) It's tripod, of course, and with the long exposure and you can see the light-trail of a jet streaking in on the left for a landing. With all the snow in the air, tonight ... some of that light pollution is reflecting back into Des Plaines.

The city is way too noisey and rushed for this guy, these days, and suburban life is much more ... sedate, if you can call it that. It's all relative. Admittedly, living among 3.5 million people has some advantages ... but, quiet is not one of them. So ... no offense taken. Des Plaines been a good place to live for the past 20 years .. and it's home.

Hey Don... all this Chicago talk is getting me pumped for my visit to Chi-town. The wife and I are spending our Christmas there - arriving early on the 21st and heading home late evening on the 25th. It's been quite a few years since I've been to Chicago for anything but a plane change. I was thinking about bringing the 17-55 2.8 IS and the 70-200 F/4 IS but I may actually only bring the 17-55. The wife is encouraging me to travel light :o

DonSchap
12-06-2007, 10:10 PM
If you are going downtown for pictures ... that 70-200 can be plenty powerful, otherwise you are going to have to get pretty close with that 17-55. Obviously, it depends on shot selection ... and that's exactly why I tote the 18-250mm with me, when I do Chicago.

I got this (23rd floor through tinted glass):

http://i147.photobucket.com/albums/r289/donschap/strange%20art/The-Bean.jpg

Then this, also, not too far away:

31439

Convenience and lightweight ... hard to go completely wrong.

I throw the whole shebang in the little case and head out. I call it the "grab & go" combo. Sure, it may not be superior IQ ... but this is for fun, not profit. A decent image ... on the run. :)

Don - I'm really glad to hear that you are having fun at school. I have been looking around locally for more classes but its not good news. I've pretty much done the rounds of individual non-credit courses. All that remains are professional/commercial full time programs and I don't want to go that route. I found the courses that I took rewarding and fun. It was a great way to help me look at photography in a different way and meet other people with similar interests. I'm wondering if there might be any on-line courses worth looking into. Any opinions?

Okay, it's not lunchtime ... it's 10:30PM ... and I'm lookin' out the second floor of the house, handholding (right hand only ... the left is propping the window open) the α700 @ 17mm ... 1/2 sec, ISO 100, f/2.8, AWB ... no flash ... just ambient crap light (three kinds, here --- Tungsten in the lamp post, fluorescent in the street light and that orange-tinted mercury-vapor from the expressway, about 3/4 mile away ... what a mixed bag, huh?) ... and some "curves" augmentation by PS/3 ... to show you what I'll be doing at 6AM, tomorrow. Yeah, it's a "lazy" shot (just try and get something this clear out of Nikon or Canon at 1/2 sec, handheld!) Anyway, I'm kind of beat. Real nice ... and Lord knows what tomorrow morning is going to really look like. It's just gettin' started ... and it would appear that "they" gave up on plowing the side-streets, tonight.

32936

Here's the current map and the weather is moving to the Northeast. Andy P. is apparently seeing this stuff, too. It's picking on Illinois, tonight. Shows you what you can do with a little Gulf of Mexico moisture, when it meets up with imported Canadian air → a regular "Alien" landscape. Chicago is snarled ... many of the roadways and expressways are just jammed ... I would surmise 50% of the population is still home ... shoveling and waiting for the streets to get cleared. It's a bit too much for most cars to get through. Six inches of the white-stuff at the wrong time can really hurt. Right in the morning ... bad timing. Better in the afternoon. Everyone is already AT work.

Here's the Perimeter Security Camera's reveal, this morning (6:55AM, not 7:55 as depicted <- that's CDT time), of the house ... just looks like more work to me!

32946

As you can see, in that rear-of-the-house/hot-tub shed camera shot labeled "W FENCE" ... the thick "white hat" that the patio heater is wearing. I gotta move that thing ... it's blocking the camera angle. Don't want neighbor kids running in and out of that.

Oh well ... off we go! :p

EDIT: Well, a hyper-extended left elbow, later, the driveway is finally clear and the street-plow finally comes through at 9:30AM. Well, off to work, then ... (Ouch  ) ... with a damaged-wing. I think I'm getting too old for this crap.

@ Nick: We're shipping what's left over your way, Nick. Enjoy!
