In "P" mode a circle appears in lower right corner with an arrow on it's left and pointing to the left. What is this and how do I control it ??

I only have about half an answer, as I have not mastered the use of that thing but it seems to be telling you you can change the focus area ......you use the joystick for that and I think its telling you which way to push the Joystick......but thats a guess ....perhaps someone can help us both.
I have messed with that and I can change the focus area but its trial and error with me.

That circle icon is for the joystick controller(arrow keypad also). When it appears, push the joystick that direction. It will start highlighting functions that appear on the LCD such as shutter speed, EV comp., aperture value. When the fuction is highlighted, that circle will have up,down,L and R arrows. Up and down arrows will allow you to increase or decrease the value of that function. L and R move to the next function.
I hope this helps, as I only owned the FZ18 a short while.

It certainly helps me......I knew the joystick did those things, but I did not relate it to the ICON.

Hey Gene-
Good to see people come here from the "other forum" from time to time too.
That function you were talking about is when you push the joystick straight in for 1 second, it opens up all the other necessary functions: ISO, AF point, IS mode,MP pict quality + raw, WB. It's a quick, sweet arrangement instead of having to dive into a menu.
I'm disappointed that I had to return it, but the other half said if you want extra lenses, 1 had to go to support the lense coffer. I wasn't giving up my Fuji, so the FZ lost out.

I hope my wife takes a liking to the FZ18 because I do not, its too small ....I am forever bumping a button I should not and the distortion at WA is awful.....I just took some photos of our Xmas tree and it looks like its falling over.....I took a few more keeping the edge of the EVF on a door frame and the tree still looks like its falling down. But it does take nice photos of birds.
