View Full Version : Disappointment w/wife's canon ELPH SD 1000 S

Having owned an AE-1, I took my son's advice and got my wife the digital ELPH SD 1000 S to take pictures of our first grand childchild. It took great pictures but turned out to be so fragile and poorly warranteed that I had to replace it with a Kodak. Simply stated, the camera was so poorly sealed that a single water spill resulted in internal corrosion. That is not the kind of construction "fit" that I expected from canon. My motorola camera phone has greater integrety.

Why, I ask, have companies that used to be both customer and product oriented chosen to abandon the customer?

Yeah, I stepped in a big puddle one time, and can you believe the INSIDE of my shoes actually got wet? I would have expected more from New Balance, even though they don't claim to be water proof in any way. I'll be switching to Payless shoes from now on.

I spilled water all over my laptop while it was on and it stopped working. I think it should have come sheathed in plastic so that couldn't happen. What a shameless way to treat customers! I'm going back to using an abacus instead of a laptop because I find this sort of thing unacceptable.

Cameras are complex electronic devices. Ultracompacts have a lot of stuff crammed into a very small space. In order to do this the lens (in most models) needs to extend out, providing an opening into the camera guts. Water is rarely compatible with camera guts. This is true for all camera, certainly not just Canons.

My SD300 and SD800 have been with me hiking/camping/skiing/boating for the past 4 years and have worked wonderfully. They've gotten slightly wet at times, but never enough to cause any problems. I'm very sorry that you had this problem with your SD1000 but I find it difficult to blame Canon (or any other manufacturer) for this problem.

There are cameras specifically designed and merketed to be waterproof or weatherproof, especially by Olympus. Perhaps one of them would be a better fit for you.

This ones for you JTL - Well, that's nothing, I happened to spill a little of my Miller Lite on my variable aperture lens and now the damn thing will only shoot at the widest aperture no matter what I try to do. :D:D:D:D:D

Wow, and I thought the only way to get a lens to do that was to put the camera in manual mode. I've gotta pick up a six pack.

And remember, if you shoot Nikon/Canon/Pentax/Sony, you're out of luck (unless something like the above happens). You can only do that with Four Thirds because Four Thirds is its own form factor.

Now all that's left is for Sony to switch to 4/3rds so we can give all of the #$%!&*s their own forum! :D:D:D

I've gotta pick up a six packJust don't pick up that crap that Dennis is drinking! ;):D

I've owned a handful of the Canon powershot cameras that were not babied by any means. They've been dropped, dinged, dented, scratched and taken many thousands of pictures reliably for years.

The only problem I ever had, the SD110's faulty CCD, was promptly remedied with a refurbished like new SD1000. Even that SD110 took 10k+ pictures before the problem appeared years later.

If you want the camera to withstand liquids, look into the Olympus models that are waterproof to 10 feet or so.

Sorry to hear about the accident with your camera.

The Oly waterproof cameras actually go to 10 meters. I may have to pick one up for use snorkeling or at waterparks. Nothing like shooting pictures while going down a waterslide.

Looks like we're both right. Two of their underwater/shockproof cameras are rated for up to 10 feet. One of them is rated for 33 feet (or ~10 meters).

I haven't taken my SD700 & underwater case to a water park yet, but it was pretty awesome for our trip to Iguazu Falls. Other people's cameras were getting ruined from all the mist and spray. Then later I was the only one able to take pictures/video during the boat ride into the falls.

I spilled water on my couch but nothing happened because it is wrapped in plastic ;)
