I have a Panasonic FZ20 and I recently bought a 2 GB SD card manufactured by Sandisk. For some reason even after I format the card using the camera, the card will not get the resident DCIM and MISC folders on it. The 512 MB and 16 MB card (came with the camera) will have these two resident folders on it after the formatting process. Any ideas? Is the card size too big?

I use 2 gb cards in my FZ20.....so that is not the problem........Perhaps the card is no good.
You say the folders are not there, but are there pictures on the camera....I really never paid attention to the folders........If you have the camera set on TIFF, change it to JPEG and see if that does anything.......the 2 gb card does not like TIFFs.
I keep my FZ20 in the car, if it quits raining I will go get it and check the folders.

Edit .............................I checked and with a Transcend 2 gb card the FZ20 put the 2 folders back after the format.

Does it take photos? I never care about file or folder structures.

thank you for the replies. I have ordered a new 2 gb card from Kingston since my 512 mb is made by kingston....i am hoping for better luck..... the pictures are in jpeg format...... if I use the USB cable to download pictures, with the card in the camera, the resident folders appear on the card. If I use the card reader, the photos are not recognized by the computer. I do not have the same problem with the 512 and 16 mb cards. both can be read by the card reader.

will post the results with the new card.

If you purchased on the Internet or via ebay there is a 9 out of 10 chance that the card is actually a fake. San Disk are one of the most pirated products in the IT industry.
San Disk have a very good warranty and replacement policy.Contact them and quote the cards serial number and if it is legit they will replace it no questions asked.

My Sandisk Extreme III 2GB works fine with my FZ20. I can upload photos both with card reader or USB cable. I think you have a bad card there.

There are card readers that will not recognize 2gb cards or larger.....generally they are pretty old readers but I do not know the dates ....I have a reader that is over 4 years old and it reads any size card....but I have heard of many with readers that do not. And even if you just recently purchased the reader, is no guarantee of the mfg.date.
There are SD card reader available for 4 dollars ,worth a try.
If you were to try a new reader you should probably make sure it will read SDHC cards as that will be the next bottleneck.

As has been mentioned, it may be your card reader. My first card reader would only read about 1/2 of a 1GB card.

I too suspect the card reader, or slot on the PC. I have the same problem with a 2Gb card and a Nikon D50. It records fine, and downloads over a cable but won't transfer pictures from a card put into the reader on my PC. Easiest solution is just to use a cable.
