XTI vs used 20D for indoor sports

still struggling with fist time DSLR. I was thinking between a D80 and XTI but my primary use will be indoor sports photos but now I'm thinking something that shoots well at high ISO with the additional 2fps.

Does the 20D have better/larger grip?

Your first question should be: What kind of lens do I need for indoor sports?

With the wrong lens you will be unhappy with both cameras.

I have both and know the 20D is far better for indoor shots.
The ISO 3200 is a life saver, extra focus points offer more flexibility, and extra two fps are necessary to get at least one good shot from an action sequence sometimes.
The focus accuracy is better, too.
The 20D is going for a bit over 500 now, that's a freakin steal.

How about D20 vs Nikon D80? I have an old Nikon 35mm FG with one sigma 35-70mm f/2.8, it's at least 20 years old . Would I be able to use it on a D80?

In the Canon world the 85 comes as an f/1.2 and f/1.8 - there is no f/1.4. The f/1.8 is the better sports lens because it focuses fast- the f/1.2 is a pig focusing.

You are probably not going to want to use your existing lens for sports because it lacks auto focus. Both the D80 and 20D are excellent cameras with their own strengths and weaknesses. The Nikon is a nicer camera in terms of ergonomics and user interface, larger LCD; the 20D shoots with less noise at high ISO, shoots at a higher fps (both important issue for indoor sports), and has a better build quality and will be less expensive giving you more money for better lenses which is what is really important.

ISO3200 is available by Custom Function #08 set to 1 (On).

I won't answer the 2nd part of your question ;):D.

If the gym you're at has bad lighting the best camera might not help.

I shot a game tonight with my 20D and the lighting was bad. Even shooting at 3200 I had problems.

Since my primary reason for getting a slr digital camera is indoor sports - will it make a difference to upgrade to a 30d/40d or d200? Will I gewt better options in regards to poor lighting that I expect to encounter??
