If there are any members of this forum that use the software that enables Raw capabilities and other options otherwise inoperable in certain Canon cameras, what is your opinion of this software?
I'm asking this question in the Canon forum because anything I've read about this software seemed to deal only with Canon cameras. If anyone feels that this thread doesn't belong in this section and moves it, let me know where it is moved to.
Thanks

Thanks for the links.
I wondered if this had already been discussed on this site.

How did you find those threads?While in the Canon Forum, I used the "Search This Forum" drop down and typed in "raw hack". See image below.

JTL
Thanks for the how to search tip.
I was using the "search the DCRP" window when I was trying to find some information on the Raw software.
Didn't even notice the, Search This Forum option. While in the Canon Forum, I used the "Search This Forum" drop down and typed in "raw hack". See image below.

BTW, I never loaded the hack on my S3 and your post reminded me of that, so I'm giving it a shot when I have time to play later this week. I think I'm going to give Fingalo's v124 release a shot (and build myself a remote shutter release while I'm at it).

I've never tried it out too. I'll try out the hack some time this week :cool:
Hey Kids!
Well I couldn't get the latest Fingalo release to load (I'll resolve when I have more time), so I went with the latest (#148) GrAnd release. Now I'm shooting RAW at ISO 50 on my S3 and never looking back! Gotta watch the clipping at low ISO settings, but the no-noise-whatsoever images are worth the extra effort. The types of things you can script would make the DSLR bigots drool if they knew about this stuff (motion detection photography...3D stereo image photography...how cool is this stuff???!!!). :);):)

:cool: I have the 148 Grand release hack installed and working.
:mad: I can't open any of the RAW files in Lightroom or CS2 :confused::mad:
O.K...what you have to do is get a program that converts the CRW file to some other intermediate format, like Adobe DNG. Work on the file in the DNG RAW format and then save it to its output format (jpeg, tiff, whatever).
Here's the program I've been using that converts CRW RAW files to DNG RAW files. Works great. Once I have the files converted to DNG, I open them in ACR and adjust as necessary (they will also open in Elements and any program that supports DNG).

Also, read the RAW section in the FAQ on the CHDK page, here:

Let me know how it works out! :)

LOL ... Thanks JTL. I figured it out last night by reading the rest of the FAQ on the CHDK page :p "Reading IS fundamental" :D :p I got too excited and didn't read the rest of the page after I got the hack installed.
Here's the only one I've played around in Lightroom so far

:mad: Not the best shot, I know. It was handheld ... 1/2s f/3.5 at 40.3mm iso50

One more question JTL. Like I mentioned above, while I was playing around with it, I didn't realize I was at iso50. Once I realized, I changed it. How do I go back to iso50? :confused: I can't find the answer in the CHDK FAQ page :mad:

Follow these script creation instructions from Chem:
This is it:
rem Sets ISO value directly
rem Use at your own risk!
@title Set ISO - DANGEROUS!
@param a ISO value
@default a 100
set_iso_dangerous a
end
Copy this into notepad and save it in the script folder on your SD card as custom iso.bas (or some other name, don't use caps) make sure notepad won't save it as custom iso.bas.txt. Run it as any other script, by clicking the shutter button while in <ALT> mode. This sets the iso, then disable <ALT> mode again and shoot.
The default value is 100 here, but you can put any number you want there. You can change the value in the hack menu but that goes with steps of 1 so I have three custom iso files on my SD card with default values of 25, 600 and 800.
Again, use with caution. I tried iso 10 to 1600 on my S2 and I never had problems with it, but I can imagine that setting it too high could damage the sensor. Very low iso values result in highlight clipping which is unfixable with photo editing software.But, he left one very important little thing out of the instructions. After you've created the script and pressed the Shortcut Key to enter ALT Mode, you must press the SET Button to bring up the Script Menu. Choose the new ISO script, then press the Shutter Button to run the script. When in ALT Mode, just press the SET Button and you can use the arrow keys to change the ISO setting. Once you've run a script, it becomes the default script until you choose and run a different script...so unless you're setting custom ISOs or choosing a new script, you don't have to use the SET Button again....only the Shortcut (ALT) and Shutter Button to run the currently defaulted script.
The script does not run at start up, so you have to remember to enter ALT Mode and press the Shutter Button to run the script each time you start up. It will default to your last ISO choice. Let me know what happens....
Also, when saving the script file in Notepad, choose Save As, type in iso.bas as the name (or any FAT 16 compliant name) and use the dropdown on the Save As Type line and choose All Files. Leave the coding as ANSI. Chem's instructions were not specific enough...a pet peeve of mine!!! :D But, of course, big thanks to Chem for posting the script!!! We owe him our gratitude!!! :):):)
FYI, I tried ISO 25, but got a severe WB shift...let me know if that happens on your camera as well.

:cool: Yes, I was reading that earlier. I'm going to try it when I get home later on today. I thought iso50 was a set or default iso in the hack somewhere, and I couldn't find how to set it again. I guess, it's easier to just use scripts.
Right now, I'm using the "Golden Grids" script :)
Thanks JTL!!!
Have you tried the Motion Detection scripts? :D

Haven't tried Motion Detection yet. You could spend days...weeks...just trying out all of the possibilities...
If I ever get the Fingalo version to run, I'm building the remote shutter release for sure!!! :D
