400mm or 500mm for K10D

I am looking for a 4 or 500mm lens for wildlife shots, I own a K10D.
I have no experience with a longer lens or what to expect.
I can not afford to spend $1200.00 on a lens, is there a place to find used lens this size? I was looking at the sigma 500mm.

Can somone help me out?
