It is in my cart. Just waiting to sway the misses, the 70-200 cost me a
three diamond ring on top of the lens:rolleyes: So gear costs me double retail.

You may as well hold off on sending the lens over for eval until the body arrives and send them both together. When I've finished I will ship the lens to Europe and the body up to Rooz for further evaluation.

Rich,

On a slightly more serious note how much sales tax do you pay on top of the $1800.00?

$US$1800.00 = Aus$2061.00

The local retail shops here are "taking orders" @ Aus$2544.00 excluding tax (to compare apples with apples) for a body only.

Of course by the time the Government take their 10% we end up at Aus$2799.00 (US$2444.00).:mad:

Sore spot with me, taxes. Sales tax varies state by state here. Maryland has a 5% sales tax, but neighboring Delaware has none! I live real close to the state line, so most of my shopping is where? Maryland's new govenor has a great way to deal with this problem, increase our sales tax
to 6%, a 20% increase!

When you buy on line most of the time you do not pay any tax, there are a few exception states where you have to pay your own states sales tax but not mine, YET!

I order from New York (B&H) no tax.

tell me about it. its a goddam joke. some retailers, (camera house), are taking preoders at $2800. i mean come on. they're taking the piss surely. talk about price gouging.

oh well, i'll be using one tomorrow at the launch. i double checked and the first shipment is all sold out so i can't be tempted by a spur of the moment decision. :p

Your mates in Hong Kong want nearly as much as well.

The price I quoted was from Camera Action in Melbourne who are part of the Camera House chain.

Yes I remember when I lived in CA that the sales tax was higher in the city of San Francisco than it was in other places for some reason. From memory it was 6.75% vs 6%.

Many people on this side of the world have no idea about how sales tax works in the USA because it's a tax that is effectively applied at the cash register. Our equivalent (GST - 10%) is generally included in all quoted retail pricing so people often compare our inc tax price with your ex tax price and complain sometimes unjustly about the differences. In this case though I fully agree with Rooz 0 Gouging at it's worst by the camera industry, they are quoting Aus$7500.00 for a D3 body!

Here the sales tax is higher yet. Then there are "luxury taxes" on things like shows and movies. Gasoline also has a county tax which means that gasoline may be cheaper in the next state over even if it is trucked from this state to that state. 10:1 if I purchase a D300 or some other new high dollar Nikon, it will probably be out of B&H even if they are the same base price.

Well, based on the exchange rate, the $1799 US is the same as about $2066 Australian. Now, my local tax is 7.5%. You would have to add your tax on top of your amount, but if you say it's 10%, then that would come to about $2272 Aus. $2800 Aus seems a touch high, to say the least.

I wonder if import duties have an impact on pricing. The US gives favored nation status to Japan, so import duties would be very low. I suspect Australia does the same, but don't really know.

There are also volume issues. The U.S. is, as we all know, the biggest consumer (some would say to gluttonous levels, but this is not the forum for that issue), and that can affect pricing.

Probably the most likely issue is that there are a wide variety of Nikon distributors in the U.S. I believe I've heard before that in Australia you really only have one authorized distributor. Not exactly a competitive environment.

We have no import duties on cameras. There are very few items here that have import duty now.

The only official distributor is Nikon Australia which is wholly owned by Nikon.

Wouldn't that be more or less the same as Nikon USA? That doesn't mean that they're the retailer, just the distributor from Nikon's base of operations.

No sales tax here in Oregon! It's advantageous to say the least. 7.25% in Ca. could get pretty nasty at times.

Yes it's basically the same set up.
The thing is that they (Nikon Australia) control the price they sell to retailers at and also set the RRP. The camera industry is fairly small here relative to the USA so most retailers stick fairly close to the RRP in advertised prices. They will deal if you are standing in a shop waving wads of money but they simply to not have the margin to be able to sell at the equivalent of the US$ price.
This is why in most cases it still cheaper to buy via ebay from one of the Hong King based suppliers. The cost including freight and GST still works out less than you can buy from local dealers.
I'm sure that when the D300 frenzy dies down in a couple of months the ebay prices will start to decrease.

kiwi. don't touch one. don't even LOOK at one. all i can say is thank F*** they didn;t have one in stock and just to be sure, all my CC's are at home. i'll wait to see what D-D's pricing is like first.

does it meter well ? ahhhhh YES.
does it AF well ? ahhhh YESSSSSSS.
does live view work ? ahhhh YESSSSSSSS.
does it perform under low light ? ahhh YESSSSSSSSSSS.
does the screen look incredible ? ahhh YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS.

my only "negative" comments. the 24-70 f2.8 is just far too big and heavy. it's a bloody joke. i'm sure lots of people will say "i prefer heavier lens'". well thats a complete load of horseshit. heavir yes, 900g ? no thanks. not an option for me by any means.

it only shoots 1.5fps, (or maybe 2.5 can;t remember now), in 14bit RAW. not sure if the 40d is the same. seems like a massive jump down to me.

incidentally there was a PJ there who has a d2x, d200 and just bought a 40d to replace his 20D. he shoots both systems and was picking up a D3 to replace the d2x. the d200 has 45,000 clicks on it btw and it looked like it had been in a war, (actually from what he says, it literally has been...timor, iraq). i laughed and asked him why not the d300 aswell ? his comment was i thought quite pertinent. with a deadpan face he says, "it's over $1000 more than the 40d."

I have decided that for the next couple of months I will heed my kids protestations when we are at the Mall and not drag them into Teds Camera's every time we pass by.
With a little bit of luck SWMBO might have to fly to some island in the Arctic circle north of Japan at some stage early next year, that might just have to involve a stop over in HK. :)
