My daughter has requested a camera for Christmas where you can make an object a certain color and then take the picure so that everything but that object is in black and white. Does anyone know what that feature is called and which cameras have that capability? I would appreciate your feedback.

Canon calls this Color Accent and it's available on most of their current cameras. Something like the A570 for a full control camera or the SD850 for an ultracompact would be a good basic choice. You can go further up their lineup of you want to spend more.

ETA: Oops, the A570 removes that feature. Maybe the A720 or A650 have it but I'm not seeing it in the specs. It looks like it wasn't that popular and Canon may have dropped it from the newer models.

This is often called "selective coloring" and as far as I know, there is no camera that will do it for her. However, it is not difficult to do in Photoshop.

I googled Color Accent and found this camera. What is your opinion?

That is not a camera model, just says that it is from Canon and it is 7mp.

Anyway. why not look through the reviews on this site, from the Canon Powershot models.

Thank you for your help. The review section was very helpful. I know at least have a starting point in which to make a decision. I appreciate it.

The Canon SD1000 still has color accent.

Just to be clear, Canon's Color Accent feature makes everything black and white except for one color. It won't pick out a single object, unless that object is the only instance of that color.

For example, a red bathing suit on the sand will work. A single red rose in a bunch of red roses won't work.

It's a MUCH easier thing to do in post processing. I've played with the function on my SD550, and it's neat, but not entirely accurate, and is limited in that anything in the entire scene, not just one object you choose, that is the color you selected will remain color.

I thought the A570 IS did have it.
I know for sure it has it in movie mode.

From the review on this site: The PowerShot A570 has a stripped down version of Canon's My Colors feature. You can make your photos more vivid or neutral, take a picture in black and white or sepia, or manually adjust the sharpness/contrast/saturation. The fun (for a while) color swap and color accent options are not available on this camera.
