The same is available at BuyDig (http://www.buydig.com/shop/product.aspx?sku=NKD40KT2) also.
Yeah, this is not VR.
Crutchfield ratings are good, but currently they dont seem to have it in stock.

quick update, I ordered this on tuesday and it arrived on friday. It also included the dvds, only thing I really missed out on was the memory card. However I've seen 1gb cards for $10 over the weekend with no rebates. Crutchfield has also extended their return policy thru the month of January

Now it sits under the tree tormenting thy wife :D

Is Crutchfield a reliable vendor?

I bought something from them a few years ago, either the subwoofer or head unit for my car. Anywho, they were very congenial and I never had any problems with the purchase or the delivery. I would do business w/ them again.

Hmm, seems like not a lot of the DSLR-folks come into this particular forum here on-site.

The 55-200mm non-VR is not a very good lens. It is vastly overshadowed by the newer 55-200mm VR, which is optically sharper, and VR is important for a telephoto that is not large-aperture, i.e., designed for low light use. At its ~$70 over the older version, the 55-200mm VR is a better choice. Not meaning to rain on your parade, though.:(

Crutchfield is indeed a reputable vendor, and has been around a long time here in Virginia. They're well-known throughout the region :)

Fion, Just wanted to know, if 55-200VR is a better buy than 70-300 VR. I ask because I heard 70-300 is not sharp after 200. Is 55-200VR sharp throught out?

One lens can be totally unlike another. So you really can't tell from the word on a different lens. The 55-200mm VR is generally very sharp. It's still a budget lens - not going to give you the quality of the very expensive lenses like the 70-200mm f/2.8. But it is a lot better than its price point would lead one to believe, and has won some awards and received quite a bit of recognition for being excellent bang for the buck. I think you'll find it sharper than the 70-300mm VR, although that is a good lens as well. And it is much better than the previous flimsy, very cheap 55-200mm Nikkor.

I've yet to hear of anyone with the 55-200mm VR who is unhappy with it. That's a high mark in my esteem. Folks may move beyond its capabilities, but it is all-around considered a great value.

No problem. The name is Andrew, by the way. Stop by the Nikon Digital SLR forum here; you'll find a lot of help and info for the D40 there.

I have 55-200 non-VR lens (came with the kit package) and I'm happy with it...but then again I'm just a newbie.:)

The guy at the store told me that I'd end up trading these lenses down the road but this is a good starter kit for someone just getting into photography. I really had absolutely NO CLUE about photography whatsoever when I purchased this camera.

Just for fun I tried out the 70-300VR lens and it's very nice but the lens costs almost the same prices as the twin lens kit!

I bought it at the end of Sept and it sucks because the price has now been reduced

Costco online has this same deal, except it comes with a 2GB memory card, and is only $600 with free shipping.
