I have about 170 35 mm slides from the 1970s that I want to digiltilize to TIFF slides.
Any recommendations?

There are plenty of good film scanners available for under $500. The New York Times Circuits section just had an article on a few this past week NY Times (http://www.nytimes.com/2004/12/30/technology/circuits/30basi.html?adxnnl=1&adxnnlx=1104512360-OVZ1OrT/XHlccfZSGIBVUA) - It requires registering to read it. I have been pretty happy with my slightly dated Minolta Scan Elite which offers Digital ICE. Last summer I scanned in 300 or so slides from the 50's and 60's. It took a while, but the results were very good.
Quite a few people are claiming good results scanning film/slides in from the high end flat beds that include transparency adapters. As long as you can get at least 1800 dpi of optical resolution they should do fine. The biggest difference is that many dedicated film scanners have the ability to adjust their focus which can help. Also a few of the better film scanners scratch and dust removal use a seperate scan to detect surface defects; I don't believe that any flat beds are capable of this.
