Hello,

It is time to upgrade my camera (Canon A40). My bigest complaint with it is the shutter lag, and I feel it is getting worse. We are tired of documenting the moment after the moment. We have tried to anticipate, but that can only compensate for so much.

I have had no issues with the 2.2MP for regular sized photos but may want larger photos of the kids in the future. Our primary uses will be for face shots and portrait style photos.

I like ease of use, but love the quality of pictures the nicer cameras (dSLR) provide, as well as the rapid fire, but think these cameras may be too much:confused: (functions, choices, lenses) for my use.

Budget
* What budget have you allocated for buying this camera? Please be as specific as possible. $200-$600:eek:, I know it is broad but for the right camera I would pay more but not sure if I need to.

Size
* What size camera are you looking for? Or does size not matter at all to you?Camera size is not a factor for me.

Features
How many megapixels will suffice for you? 5MP is fine but the newer cameras appear to push the number as much as possible.

* What optical zoom will you need? (None, Standard = 3x-4x, Ultrazoom = 10x-12x, Other - Specify) 6X is adequate but Ultrazoom would be best. I'm not going to lose sleep I don't have ultrazoom though.

* How important is “image quality” to you? (Rate using a scale of 1-10)8, I'm not a pro but appreciate great quality in a photo

Do you care for manual controls?I use a lot of auto, but would like the manual fuctions for when I progress in my photo skills.

General Usage
* What will you generally use the camera for? I shoot the kids at events and playing around town. We rarely shoot landscape or scenery and those pictures always include people.

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not? Yes

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos?Yes

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos?Yes, currently the action shots are fairly close up, but I expect more true sport shooting in the near future.

Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate?No

Are there particular models you already have in mind?Canon S3/S5 A720, Sony H5, Eos Rebel X.

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)All are neat features, but I can't say I need them with my limited knowledge. I hate redeye and would hate to spend a bunch of time always fixing it on the camera or on a computer program.

Thanks in advance,

TR

What about the Canon A570IS? It's very similar to the A720 but it doesn't seem as affected by the long flash recycle delay. I'm considering it for myself.

I'm also considering the Fuji F40fd, which produces nice-looking photos and is especially good at indoor and low-light shots.

In the DSLR area the Pentax K100D and the Nikon D40 are both good choices. Check out their reviews on this site.

I doubt that the A570 IS is any faster w/ the flash recycle time, as they both use 2 AA batteries and have the same image processor.
I would say the A720 IS is a better buy, since you can add conversion lenses later for a longer shot.

You can add conversion lenses to the A570 as well.

Thank you for the input. I will take a good look at the A720.

The biggest difference between the A570 and the A720 is the price. The A570 is $150, the A720 is $200. If you need a little bit of extra zoom, go ahead.

If you're looking for an ultra zoom, the Canon S3 is a good choice, though ISO performance is subpar. The S6000fd is excellent in lowlight situations.
