sb600 with d40

OK, I've spent the last hour or so going through the camera and the flash manual trying to determine how to set up this flash as a remote wireless.

In one paragraph it seems to indicate that it can be done but the next seems to say it can not.


Can any one clear this up for me?
Can the d40 do this or do I need the sb-r200?
Or will neather flash work this way with the D40?

To use the SB600 (or any other flash for that matter) on a D40 as a remote flash you need either an SB800 set to master slave or a radio trigger and receiver such as the Pocketwizard or ebay trigger.

check out the D40 pics thread to see the awesome pictures R3g posted!!! He has the trigger. I think he got it off ebay for like $20!

Another option is to buy the Nikon SU-800 wireless commander to control the SB600 off camera.

I forgot to add that the other reason I was confused was I also looked on
Ken's site and he lists it as the first built in option in custom settings for the flash. Which I found in the flash menu
Mode + - second set Z shaped arrow select on.

When I do this 2 small red bulbs in the front top of the sensor start to flash

So is this option not working because of the camera? Ken doesn't list the D40, but the article seems to also be pre D40, so I wasn't sure.

You are correct in that your camera does not support the nikon creative lighting system (wireless flash). The D200, D80, D70s, D70 all have a commander mode for the popup flash however the D40,D40x and D50 do not have this function so you either need the SB800 to function as the on camera master to control the off camera SB600 (in your case) or SB800, or the SU800 wireless controller.

One thing that I would recommend is learning how to use the flash in manual mode. TTL is really restrictive and gives random results at times.

I'm in the process of getting as many old Nikon flashes as I can. Using igther the ebay triggers (modified) or PC cables (then eventually Pocket wizards) you can use them in full manual with more control and flexibility than with CLS.

I agree, I use CLS but never use TTL. I find manual easier and more consistent.
