I presently use a three year old Panasonic Luminex "point and shoot" digital camera. I"m really happy with the camera (especially; image stabilization, ultra zoom function, picture quality).
However, I find one thing frustrating. When I attempt to take any action pictures, the delay after hitting the "shoot" button means that I miss most action shots.
Does anyone know of a "point and shoot" digital that will give me image stabilization, ultra zoom, excellent picture quality PLUS RESPOND RAPIDLY TO PRESSING THE "SHOOT" BUTTON AND SHOOT MULTIPLE FRAMES PER SECOND??
Thanks for any help.

Have you seen the Casio prototype? 300 fps.

What's your budget?
A Nikon D40 digital SLR is about $480 from Amazon.com with an 18-55mm kit lens (3x optical or so) and a 55-200mm (3x-11x) VR image-stabilized lens is $229. It's hardly bigger than the largest ultrazoom point & shoots, and it will give you virtually no shutter lag (like any other DSLR).

All P&S cameras will have more shutter lag then a DSLR. With the current generation of ultrazooms the differences between them aren't that great. The trick is to pre-focus and set as many manual settings as you can so the camera doesn't have to make choices at the last moment.
Burst mode is different; the camera doesn't refocus between shots but is great for most action. The Canon S3 shoots 2.1 fps until you run out of memory, the S5 drops to 1.5 fps, the Panasonic FZ50 is 1.8 fps, the FZ18 is 2.0 fps. You can find the rest in the reviews. This is how I shoot sports, just frame the area you want and keep the shutter release pressed.
Almost any DSLR will blow these away but that's not what you asked for.
