Hi,

I had some years ago a sony dsc t5, I used it for partying and so on ... it was compact, but the quality was poor (too much noise) due to the small "visor".

Christmas is comin' and I'm gonna order a new camera. I searched a little on internet and I found out with some results

- Canon G3
- Panasonic DMC-TZ3
- PANASONIC Lumix DMC-LX2 silver

I think I'm gonna shortcut the two first. The advantage of the LX2 is the panoramic, but I don't think it will worth...

I'm 28 years old, IT security consultant @ airbus

I wanna buy a nice camera, not too big (the g3 is a little bigger than the TZ3, but it's still ok) that makes nices pictures !

What would you advise me ?

Cédric

The Canon G3 hasn't been made in several years. The current model in that line is the G9. The Canon model that is most similar to the TZ3 is the SX100.

You haven't really given enough information to recommend a camera. Please fill out the questionnaire at the top of the "What Camera Should I Buy" forum to give us enough info.

Hi David,

First thanks for the fast reply.

I apologized. I'm going to fill in this questionnaire later in the evening.

Basically, I just wanna know if the G9 is really better than the TZ3. Both have basically the same size.

I saw both apparels in real life in my store, but I need like the professional and senior advices. Sometimes, some people just say : go for the G9, the other is rubbish... others say the opposite.

Is there a BIG difference between both apparels ? I mean I know that the G9 is more manual and the TZ3 more automatic... but is there a unique choice which makes no doubt ?

Thanks a lot,

Cédric

They're very different cameras, it's hard to compare. Neither is better then the other in a general sense.

The TZ3 is a compact ultrazoom with no manual controls or optical viewfinder and a fairly small sensor. It is relatively inexpensive, provides a lot of zoom in a small size, and takes pretty good images but isn't great in low light.

The G9 is a compact camera with 6x zoom, large sensor, full manual controls, IS, and has RAW support. It is expensive and a little clunky for my tastes, but will provide better image quality then the TZ3.

Without knowing what you want in a camera it's impossible to pick one or the other. It's like asking which is a better car, a sports coupe or a pickup truck? If you like the ultrazoom capabilities of the TZ3 you should look at the Canon SX100 which is very similar. Why did you pick these two cameras? They're not very much alike.
