It's time for a digital camera for the family. Here's the info:

Budget: $300, give or take

Size: Not a big deal but probably not a compact.

How many megapixels will suffice for you? 6 and up

* What optical zoom will you need? Ultrazoom = 10x-12x preferred

* How important is “image quality” to you? (scale of 1-10) 8

Do you care for manual controls? Yes, but it's not a deal-breaker

* What will you generally use the camera for? Family activites (plays, chorus) and vacation

* Will you be making big prints of your photos or not? Nothing bigger than 8x10

Will you be shooting a lot of indoor photos or low light photos? Yes

Will you be shooting sports and/or action photos? Not much

Are there particular brands you like or hate? I'm big on Nikon, but I don't have to have one.

Are there particular models you already have in mind? the Fuju FinePix S700, Canon PowerShot S3 IS, Fuji FinePix S6000fd, GE X1, Kodak EasyShare Z710 and Z712 IS, Nikon Coolpix S10, Olympus SP-510UZ, Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ8, and the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H7. Some of these are a little over my price range, but I was looking at them anyway.

Do you need any of the following special features? Would like to have Image Stabilization

Have read the DCRP reviews on these cameras and wanted other input before making up my mind.

Thanks

Don
