I'm shooting a wedding this week and rented some nice glass. Most importantly the 17-55mm f/2.8 Here is a shot of my son taken at 1/80th, f/3.5 and ISO 100. SB-800 fired via wireless commander, on a light stand and through an umbrella. Typical portrait editing done in PS CS3.

I've read a lot of reviews saying this lens isn't much nicer than the 18-135, but I don't see how that is even remotely true after using it. This lens is extremely nice, as it should be for the price.

it looks good, is there any way you can post a larger picture so we can see detail?

I was trying to keep the post size down. Click my Flickr link in my signature. A larger size is located on that site.

nice shot. love the lighting and facial expression. not too sure about the PP though. looks pretty messy around the edges.

It's got my vote, though I'll be going with the new 24-70mm I labored over getting this lens for a long time. Nice Classic96. ;)

It's messy because I shot him against a textured wall in my house. I just used a few layers to blow out the background and didn't spend much time to clean up any edges. If this was shot against a real white backdrop, I'm sure it would have been very clear. This was just a quick test.

People who say that haven't used it. This is my walk around lens for a DX camera. Not so good when they come out with an affordable FX. :(

Some people will point to measureable tests and say that the resolution from 35-55mm is just average. That may be true, but there are a lot more qualities to a lens than just resolution. Color rendition is excellent. Bokeh is very nice. It's fast at a constant f2.8 max aperture. There's a little distortion at the extremes, but it's reasonably well controlled. Build quality is excellent. Focusing is extremely fast and accurate. What's not to like?
