I just recently bought a Canon DLSR XTi, and I love it quite a lot and the amount of awesome pictures I can take with it.

However I want to invest some money on buying a great lens for this awesome camera. I know money does play a big role in deciding which lens to buy, thats the reason I am posting this here. So that I can get some feedback on deciding which lens to buy. My budget is around a $1,000 I can go a $100 dollars up or down depending upon the price of the lens. I was looking into the following lens -

Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L USM

Canon EF 70-200mm f/4.0 L IS

Also what are some of the good lens for taking potrait shots as well as some telephoto lens that will help me capture shots of landscape at very far distances??

Your suggestion will be very helpful.

There are already threads asking this question and the conclusion was f/2.8

Wengler is absolutely right. The lens with the widest aperture will be the most versatile for your use. Also the most costly, so judge the cost difference against versatility.

The f/2.8 will be heavier I think but it will also be better for portraits and indoor action than the f/4. As far as a dedicated portrait lens I would think any prime that's fast and between the 50mm and 135mm would do the trick depending on the type of shot. I'm sure the 70-200mm f/2.8 would work though it's size might make it a pain for portraits.

TheWengler thanks for the comment, also what would be some of the good lenses to capture landscape or sports action in doors or outdoors, which also can be used indoors at the same time or for portraits. I guess I want to spend money on something that I can use for portraits, landscape, sports action, as well as for various other things.

The f/2.8 should be good as long as you aren't too far from the action. Usually you want a wide lens for landscapes but it seemed like you had some ideas about telephoto landscapes. I don't usually do that so I don't have an answer for you.
