My history with Nikon problems is troubling. Within a year or so after purchasing a Nikon D70 the display failed. I bought my son a Nikon D40 with the 18-135mm Nikkor and the body has trouble recognizing that the lens is attached, eventually it does and... I just sent my 18-200mm Nikkor back to Nikon for repair as It suddenly devloped an inability to focus at infinity at least at the 200 mm focal length. I think Canon is causing Nikon to trip because it's runnin too fast. Any thoughts are welcome.

Your issues are valid to you but they are contrary to what the wider community is obviously experiencing based on the latest J D Power Customer Satisfaction Report (http://press.nikonusa.com/2007/10/nikon_d_series_ranks_highest_i.php) that rated Nikon DSLR's as the number one product in the industry.
This link (http://www.jdpower.com/electronics/ratings/digital_camera/dslr) directly to J D Powers web site sort of puts your Canon assertions into perspective.

Take advantage of Nikon's warranty policy. But no, your experience doesn't seem to mirror that of most Nikon users.

Dang. I would switch to Canon if I were you. Hate to say it since I don't think that your problems are common at all amongst others. But heck. We don't need people with your luck smearing the Nikon / Nikkor names.:D
Sorry, that was a bit rude maybe - really I am just kidding. Honestly, I think that you have really beaten the odds. Maybe you should play the lottery! Ok, that seemed to be a joke too... dang.
To answer your question and try even harder not to be a smartash, I think you have been the victim of very unusual circumstance. Nikon should treat you like a king with all of that misfortune.
Whew... Didn't think that would be a hard one to answer... Honestly, I have handled all of those products, and while the lenses don't appear like they could take a beating, the Nikon bodies can take a lot of abuse. Even the D40(x) bodies are pretty sturdy for their weight. So the consumer lenses - I agree might be a bit weak. I haven't had one issue after a year and a half of use with my D70s, 18-200mm, SB600, and 50mm.

my first thought was "how unlucky" and then i read the above, and my next thought was you're a troll.

If it was not your first post it might be believable. Do us a favor and just be happy with your Canon and stop having Nikon envy. :D

If you go to Vegas, you might want to stick to just going to the shows. Stay out of the Casino.
The 18-200 issue is known, but apparently you don't use yours much, because it's a problem that was only in very early models, and most should have been repaired by now. It's been a year and a half since I sent mine in.
I agree with T and Rooz, they just beat me to the punch!:D
I just looked outside and it appears there is cold rain falling.... LOL

Was it used? Just wondering since this is your first post and the Nikon D70 has been replaced with newer models a couple of times since it's release.

Is the Aperture locked?

If anything Canon is probably trying to catch up to Nikon's new models. Just curious, how long did it take you to find this forum?

From the DPR review, there's very little to sell the 40D except its price point - it's not radically different from the 30D. Nikon, on the other hand, has all the exposure and attention they could want with what's offered in the D3/D300. Canon is more than a single step behind - they'd better get on it and finally replace that ol' XTi.
The true test for this thread will be if Mr or Ms Whitestone ever posts again on this forum.
