I'm looking to find a case that I can carry onto a plane to and from the UK.

The legal limit is 22"x17.5"x9.85" or 56cmx45cmx25cm. I'd love to know how they arrived at that size!

Anyway, It makes sense to me to use a case slightly smaller in each dimension just in case they decide to measure it and find the tolerances are a bit tight.

I like the Pelican 1510 but it's exactly 22" in one dimension which is a bit close to the limit IMHO.

I'm looking at the next one down - the Pelican 1500 which is 18 1/2 x 14 1/16 x 6 15/16" or 47 cm x 35.7 cm x 17.6 cm.

The annoying thing is that because there is no real camera shop locally, I can't just take my gear along to try it in the case! Thus I'm trying to get something just 1 inch under in every dimension and will simply fit what I can into it. Does anybody know of anything as close as 21"x16.5"x8.85"?

This is the one I have:

http://pelican.com/cases_detail.php?Case=1550

I have a Canon XT with kit lens, a Tamron 18-200 zoom, a Canon Photura P&S 35 but it is a large camera, a Canon S5IS, Canon 220EX flash, Canon 430EX flash, Canon BG3 grip for the XT, a couple of sets of extra AA batteries and charger, an extra battery and charger for the XT and I could throw the whole thing off the roof without damage.

I sorta wish I had gotten one slightly larger, but there is never a problem with airline carry-on. I would never, ever, put it in checked baggage, even with a lock because I'll end up with it empty.

Hope this helps out.

Thanks. Can you tell me if the measurements of 20.62" x 16.87" x 8.12"
(52.4 x 42.8 x 20.6 cm) are accurate. Does that include the handle, hinges, feet etc or is it just the dimensions of the body alone?

As acurately as I can measure without setting up a measuring table, those dimensions are outside, including everything, measurements. It is definitely below the US-FAA max size by an inch or so.

Thanks. I might be getting one of those in a month or so.

Sorry, no info. With certainty I could tell you the quality is inferior to Pelican, but cheaper as well.

I have over $2000 worth of stuff in my case. The Pelican quality is DEFINITELY worth it.

I tend to agree. There's not very much difference in price between the Pelican and the Chinese knock-off brand.

The Pelican 1500 is $90
The Pelican 1550 is $110
The backstrap for them is $50
(all prices from www.all-pelican-cases-4-less.com)

The cheap Chinese knock-off is $90 so it's not that cheap really.

Looking at B&H,
The Pelican 1550 is $111
The Pelican 1500 is $90

So... the cheap Chinese knock-off just doesn't seem at all attractive!
