On the refurb vs. new question previously posted, I decided to pick up a new copy of the lens.

I mounted it on the camera and went out shooting. I notice that the end of the barrel has some play to it. A very small amount when the barrel is fully extended, and more when it is fully collapsed (noticeable when putting the hood or the lens cap on.)

Is this normal for this lens? Should I return it, or just not worry about it and take pictures.

I don't know anyone else who has this lens, and the local shop doesn't carry it so I ordered it from B&H.

As a point of comparison, my 70-300mm VRII, also a consumer grade lens, is rock solid with no wobble.

There are tons of reports of that with this lens. I wouldn't worry too much, personally. I have this lens (it wobbles a tiny bit when it's retracted) and have never had an issue.

My has some play in it as well. I can not remember if it did it when I first got it or not. Never encountered any problems image wise, as a matter of fact it is a very sharp lens, but I do notice some dust on the inside of the glass. Not sure if it is because of the play or if this is normal for lenses that extend.

I know for other reasons it just made me chuckle.

:D Yeah I thought about that after I replied too. I love the lens, have shot thousands of photos through it over the last 2 years. I just happened to purchase a Tamron 17-50 to compare it with, and decided to keep the Tamron for the f/2.8 and the sharpness (not to mention the Tamron is about the same size).

I'd keep the 18-70 if I thought I'd use it enough, as it is a very good sample.
