Hello
I just purchased this lens from B&H. It should arrive tomorrow. I am excited about it. I am going to test it for a few days. Hopefully I will get a good copy. Does anyone have an idea how to properly test it. sorry it might sound like a newbie question. Well, I still am :)
You should log your testing on the forum ;). I need some reassurance on this lens before I buy it.

do me a big favor. at 18mm take a picture of a pole so i can see how distorted it is wide open. i read the tests and it said its not too bad but i want to be sure.
thanks alot

You should have a large support group of those who in fact just want some free advice on the lens.:D
*adds name to the list*

Is it worth paying the extra for the HSM drive?
I looked at the previous model and it's about $210 cheaper than the new HSM model

are you talking about the 18-50mm that is 97 dollars?
There are some 370 real world photos from this lens on the Flickr Group specifically for it. (http://www.flickr.com/groups/sigma1850exdcmacro/)

I like what I see, and the HSM version should be equal or better so me like :]
According to the Flickr Group intro all photos posted are supposed to be from the HSM version of the lens.

hankbeblazin, that lens sells for $699 in Canada.
Being that much more expensive than the previous model, hence my question of cost justification.
Does the outer front ring on the new version rotate automaticaly during autofocus?

Finally got the lens.
I haven't done much testing yet. The build quality is good. First thing I noticed is the sound. it is much quieter and faster than my 50mm.
The focus ring does move.
