For commerical photography what is a good starting rate to charge a customer?

i'm taking pictures of a guy who breeds horses and i have to photograph 30 horses, not only standing still but going over jumps also.

should i say hourly?

or should i say a flat rate?

You can charge hourly or flat rate for the actual shoot. A strategy of many pros is to charge per print based on print size. A local search is the best way to see what the average going rate in your area is, which can vary a lot from one place to another. What goes in NYC would seem ludicrous in much of the rest of the US, for example.
