View Full Version : Problem with a newly purchased D80
Let me start out by saying that I know next-to-nothing about camera's or photography. I purchase this camera to start learning. :)
Last night I took delivery of a new D80 with 2 lenses:
- 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G EDII, AF-S DX Zoom (the kit lens)
- 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED, AF-S DX VR Zoom
Everything I've tried is simply with the camera in Auto mode.
When I attach the 55-200 lens everything works as I would expect. Auto focus works, camera takes pictures, etc.
When I attach the 18-55 nothing works. The LCD and Viewfinder both show "F--" and when I attempt to take a picture, "r11" is alwo displayed. The camera won't take pictures. If I put the camera in "M" mode, and manually focus, the shutter will release, but the resulting picture is all black.
I got this late last night, so I haven't contacted Nikon customer support yet.
#1 - This lense should work perfectly with the camera, right? It was the kit lens.
#2 - Any idea why its not working?
Thanks!

Yes, that lens does work with the D80 and from what you have described something is indeed wrong with the lens. Are you sure it fully locking into place?

Yes, its fully locked into place. I found the 24/7/365 Nikon support number, and they said it was the lens as well. Would I be better off sending this lens to Nikon for repair, or attempting to return it to the seller (Adorama)?

I'd try Adorama first and it should be a quik turn around. Using USPS Priority Mail will get it to them in a couple of days Insurance is like a dollar more I'd get that as well you'll have confirmation that they recieved the package also. And this should preserve your Nikon warranty.

i recently dealt with adorama and i needed to cancel an order, and i had no problems doing so. so with a return im sure theyll replace it.
The camera is indicating that it does not think a lens is attached.
Check the electrical contacts on the lens (the little silver dots that touch the camera body). Clean them by rubbing them with an eraser.
Make sure that the camera is turned off when you connect and disconnect lenses.
Try switching the lens between M and A.
Take the battery out of the camera. Wait 15 minutes then put the battery back in the camera and reattach the lens.
If none of that works send the lens back.

if you want to try to clean the contacts I would recommend isopropyl alcohol (at least 90%) and good q tips to clean them. I use this on CPU's and most other computer parts when I build and or repair them. An Eraser may leave some stuff behind where if you use good isopropyl alcohol (i use 100%) it will leave absolutely no residue.

Good accurate advice.
I was just making a suggestion that the OP could try using something they probably had at hand.

My advice remains, Send it back! It should have worked in the first place even if it starts working doesn't mean it won't fail again and no need to give them a reason to say it was your fault.

Thanks for the advice all. That's my plan...I'm going to contact adorama when they open on Monday and set up the return.
Again, thanks!
