Just got back from the annual pilgrimage to 'The Mountain', so I have the usual car racing shots.

Morning warm-up down Conrod Straight. The lead-car is lifting its front wheel at around 185mph as it heads into The Chase.

The shot of Garth Tander could be his publicity photo! You need to think about the racing world as a possible source of paid gigs (if you're not doing it already).

Numbers 3,4, and 5 prove it once and for all...you are the man when it comes to the pan!

Number 12 is the classic line-up shot, with perfectly controlled DOF. The lead car is tack sharp and the background is blurred....but not too blurred. That's when knowing your stuff really shows...picking the right lens...picking the right shooting distance. We can learn a lot just by analyzing these shots compositionally, the settings, the lens choices...

On numbers 15 and 16, stunning BTW, did you pre-focus or use AI Servo?

Such great work, C-Dub...I fully expect to see your work in a major racing mag (forgive me if you've already been there) or even S.I.

Thanks for posting these wonderful images and the shot details!

You are too kind JTL, thanks for the compliments.

I am going to send that shot of Garth to HRT to try and get in with them - you never know.

The tight shots (15 & 16) were AI Servo. When the Mark III gets its stuff together it can work really well.

Thanks for looking, I hope to see them in some fancy mag too!

Thanks Stephen, did you go to the race?

No, I've been in previous years but this time decided to watch from the comfort of home. I don't need the volume on though, as the race can be clearly heard from anywhere in town!
Do you just photograph the cars (and 'pit crew') or do you get a chance to snap the crowds as well? Were you camping? Compared to the last few years it sounds like it was pretty civilised on the Mountain. Are you a Ford or a Holden fan?

I camped with a few new friends behind the paddock, adjacent to the Chase.

I didn't do any crowd shots this year. This was my first year with credentials so I was really trying to make the most out of it. In the past I spent an hour down the bottom and then went up the top for the most part but this year I had pit access (photos coming) so I couldn't afford to stuff around plus I wanted to get to many vantage points which are difficult to access from the GA areas (like the Cutting and Griffins Bend).

It was quiet up the top. An over-supply of cops saw to that. I probably favour Holden but I wouldn't call myself a fan - I was actually really happy for Craig Lowndes as I rate him a lot as a driver and an all-round top bloke.

It was good to see Glenn Seton bring the other HRT car home. This was probably his last year and it's sad that such an accomplished driver and another all-round top bloke has never won this event.

These are great Christian! I love the first 300mm F2.8 IS shot with all the cars lined up single file down the long straightaway - with the selective focus and shallow DOF it looks almost like a tilt-shift shot. Very cool. (Oh of course the Pit Crew pic too. ;) )

600 must have been a typo, because I didn't bring it this trip - too heavy to cart. I carried the rest with me most of the time, except when I was in the pits at which time I just took the 16-35/2.8 II and the 50/1.2 - both courtesy of CPS.

I have a Lowe Pro backpack which fits all the above minus the 500/4 IS (plus 580EX II, 2x EOS-1D Mark IIIs, and charger). It's heavy and certainly tests my stamina and strength up those big hills at Bathurst, but there's nothing really I would want to leave behind.

Thanks for looking, more on the way. :)

great shots christian looks like you really did enjoy your first time.

so for future shooting reference it seems the 16-35 and 300 got used the most? so really 16-35, 70-200 and 300 and a TC of sorts would be sufficient even replace the 70-200 with 135 perhaps

For sure that would be a very tidy combination. I was tempted by the versatility of the 70-200/2.8 IS, but IQ won over in the end so I chose the straight 200/2.8 II. The 50/1.2 was just along for the ride as I borrowed from CPS for the weekend.
