When and exactly how do I use it? I know it is to help reduce glare. I have the fuji s6000. In the summer I plan to use it for swim team and diving.
But what about now?

It's very difficult to use a CP for action photography. I use mine mostly for landscapes and shoots that I can control. Works really nicely to get a more blue sky and remove the glare from water.

The CP will be most effective when you and the sun for a right triangle, 90 degrees.

The best way to shoot the swimming will be to position yourself and set the CP. If you're lens has internal focusing you're fine, but if your lens rotates to focus then you'll have to prefocus on a point and set the CP then.

I'm no expert, but I did hear once that you should rotate the polarizer until the white mark on it is pointing at the sun. The polarizing effect will be most apparent when you are turned 90 degrees from the sun (meaning it is over your left or right shoulder.)
