Just got the camera yesterday and so far it's everything I expected and more. I only wish you could zoom in and out while shooting a movie. These pics are all shot in "Auto" mode, my two friends were shot using "face detection" The Yashica camera pic was shot in "Macro" mode for an ad I'm placing on Ebay The truck was shot without any changes aka default settings.Zoom tryout pics are found on the "Photo from the S700" topic. Hope you enjoy the pics.

Loved the turkey shots travist! Very nice work.

Barry, the S8000fd's macro seems to work just as well as the zoom!
The Yashica shot was crystal clear!
With an 18x zoom any vibration at all will be very noticeable at the telephoto end of its range, in those circumstances I think you're absolutely right in thinking that a tripod would be a good idea! Good luck with the tripod research.

Travist,
Make sure you push the shutter button halfway down before you shoot your pics, it sets up the auto focus. I kept forgetting about that and sometimes got less than sharp pics

Yes I do that, I had a fuji s 5000 before this one. That took nice pictures I had the tele lens. It was a little better with tele lens than the 18 optical. at least in the sports mode. Keep sending them pictures.

Hi Barry

I checked the 'pod, and it looks like a bargain at 50% off, just the thing to get started. Doesn't look too bulky at something like 20" packed and only 2.4kg, it looks like a reasonable light-weight tripod, good for travel etc., but for something so light you will need to take special care of it and handle it carefully.

I liked your Fuji camera shots, you've really got that macro working well. :D

cheers,

Not bad pics at this setting, I'm impressed. So many people are complaining at pics shot at 400 ISO, Sure these pics are gonna be grainy at such a high setting as ISO 1.600 but what do you expect... A Mona Lisa?

I don't think I know of anyone who would use this highest setting of 6400 ISO but it was fun just to see what it would do, I did have to lighten up the pic a tad using Thumbs Plus. I think everyone should have some sort of graphics program to retouch some pics, the cheapest will do for most shots. Agree Ben?

Would I getting lower noise if my settings were higher..like 200 ISO (as in the middle pics) and a lower Msetting like 4? Still somewhat new to digital. A tripod sure helps!! LOL

Hello everyone!!! Thanx for invite, barryindallas!! Came to see this nice growing thread..
Nice pics! Qulity of pics is just as s5700 and it`s very good 18x zoom feature...
barryindallas, you are right-you can`t get `mona lisa` look with high used ISO value.. It can be useful when flash light fails(bleaching scene..)... Try to use manual focus in the low light conditoions and results must be better..That What I`m doing with my s5700!
Cheers friends!!

I had a trip to Sequoia & Kings Canyon National Parks planned for earlier this month and needed a camera; my first digital! I had narrowed it down to the S6000 or the S8000 and finally decided on the S8000, mainly because of the IS and the bigger zoom. I'll need a lot more practice before I become comfortable with the manual modes but, considering the limitations of the photographer, I like the camera so far.

I've posted an album of my favorite (even if not technically the best) photos from the trip on Picasa: http://picasaweb.google.com/anpicdor

In the DCRP review of the S6000, Jeff posted some photos of his trip to the same parks so you might find it interesting to compare them: http://lostworld.pair.com/blog/archives/000970.html

Constructive criticism welcome! Thanks.

Hello guys, new to the forum here. Have been in the market for a new cam for a couple of weeks now, and up until recently, had my mind pretty much set on the Canon S5 IS. Then I was redirected to look at the finepix s600 because of it's better performance in low light/higher ISO settings. The only thing that couldn't convince me to go with the s6000 was the fact that it didn't have image stabilization. Then came the s8000 fd, and lo and behold, it comes with true mechanical image stabilization. With that addition, it seems to have become the perfect camera for what I'm looking for, and I'm getting close to pulling the trigger. I'm not in the know enough to handle a DSLR, and I'm terribly disappointed with the quality of most digicams in lower light situations. So, I'm looking for something with lot's of zoom, as good as it can get performance in lower light without jumping up to a DSLR, face detection and image stabilization. So, I'm asking you guys out there that own the s8000 fd. Have I found my camera??? Or is there still a valid argument to go with the Canon S5 IS?
I know it's a matter of personal preference and opinion, but I would like to hear from s8000 owners about their statisfaction or dis satisfaction with their purchase of the s8000.
Thanks,
dave in Japan

Hi to all.
I have the S8000fd from a week and I am very happy :-)
I want to buy a 6500fd but then I have seen it in a shop and it is really too big...
Then 6500 is lacking of image stabilitation and it has not a 18x zoom so I was to wait for a S5700 (7.1 megapixel) but then Fuji announced s5800 (8 megapixel) and I was waiting for this model until when I have seen the s8000fd in a shop: was soon love :)
I like a lot its dimensions, the nice LCD screen, but overall the SUPER MACRO function: it's really great!!!
I don't like the battery slot door and the lacking of a screen protector (for this I have just orderred a transparent screen protector special papers) but the zoom is really great with its double image stabilization!!!!!
Here is some my shots in full automation mode (scaled at 800*600 in PhotoShop):

Glad you like the camera, still experimenting with mine..A LOT, settings take awhile to conquer to get just want you wanted. I had the S5200/S5700 but it was stolen. I thought it was only a 5MP camera so you did better than you thought at shopping :)

The s8000 is getting a bad rap, mostly from people who have never used one, it's all about trial and error and knowing the settings. Do you you your rebate form? $50!!! Do you remember your settings? I always shoot in "P" mode as opposed to "Auto" as you can shoot at any ISO, "Auto" mode chooses 800 as it's default when using flash, close ups with flash are great at 64 ISO, crisp and sharp.

Love car shows, wish I could be there. If you know the kind of lighting, I can help you with the settings. I'm thinking you should use auto white balance and "P" mode and use the lowest ISO you can use without a flash. As I have said to others, I have free long distance so if you send me an e-mail and tell me what time you'll be at the show, I can call your cell phone (if you have one) and help you out (info below) over the phone.Have fun, let me know about the new Camaro, I've been hearing a lot about it.

i saw some spy shots of the new camaro with very little camo on it, and they bulked it up, it is more "charger like" you know? like fat. ill get some pics of it, i plan to take a ton.

as far as the lighting, its always super bright in there. its in a convention center so im not sure if that helps you

Hi folks-

I am new to this thread. In fact it was this thread and some image searching over at www.pbase.com that led to agree wholheartedly with Barry, that the Fuji S-8000 is not only probably a really fun camera, but also an excellent buy right now due to the $50 Fuji rebate.

Therefore, I ordered one last night. As soon as it arrives next week, I too will be posting some photos from the S-8000 as well.

I first thought of FD as just another gimmick on cameras just to create more sales but found out in practice, it actually works pretty good. Here's a picture of my niece (on right) with her friend. I think it's a great option to use when skin colors on subjects are dramatically different.

Barry, like the pic of the girls. One of the reasons that I picked the Fuji S700 for my digi-camera was because of Fuji's ability to get skin colors right, especially those of different ethnicities. This was true of my old A101 and it is still true of the new cameras of today like my S700 and your S8000. BTW miss you in the S700 thread.:(

Just picked up a Pentax K100D on Ebay with three lenses, big camera bag, filters, rechargable batteries with charger and he's throwing in a Pentax 1000K 35mm SLR all for $525. I hope it looks/acts like new as the seller claims, he has a good 100% seller rating so I'm hoping for the best, price was too good to pass up, sure I could sell the whole thing if I don't like it for a lot more. Are you thinking about buying the s8000? prices are cheap right now for it. The new s8100 isn't really worth the added price for two more megapixels and the other tweaks I would never use.

Hi guys, new to the forums...

I just got my s8000fd today, so far it's done pretty well... I don't really know how to work it..

The moon shots were done in Manual mode, the first one is zoomed 18x, then the rest of it is digital zoom, so considering that fact, not bad at all! They weren't first shot pictures either, i just messed around with the settings until I got a product I liked.. probably took about 15 others, lol.

The other shot was what little glimpse of a sunset I had while driving to work, it was just taken on Auto while driving down the street not looking:p

These aren't edited in any way, except for where photobucket resized them :(

I doubt they're worthy, but if anyone wants full res versions just email me @

Not bad shots for your time using the camera. I ready don't the s8000's "auto" mode especially with flash. "P" mode allows much more flexibility as the flash defaults at 800 ISO in "Auto" P (program) mode allows you to adjust the ISO to 64 for sharper prints, portraits are great too. Just remember the higher the ISO in flash mode, the further away you can be from your subject. Did you use a tripod for your moon shots? Use it and set the self timer for sharper shots, white balance settings are tricky also, since your not wasting film, play around with them.

No I didn't use a tripod on either of them... I just had an extrasecond while at work and decided to fool around. I have a few days off this weekend so i'll have time to mess around with settings more then, I hate getting a new toy and then not having time to play with it :(

Hi Barry-

The FedEX Lady just delivered the Fuji S-8000. It looks very good. It certainly shows S-700 blood lines, making the camera very easy to use. I had batteries already charged, so after unpacking the camera carefully, I popped in the batteries, an XD chip and was happily taking my first photo, which traditionall is always of Bradley, my husband.

He had just been complaining about being too warm and took off his shirt. So we have plenty of skin to show the S-8000 color rendering, which I think is pretty darned good.

"IQ" or image quality is a very subjective judgement.Generally speaking we are looking for proper focus, proper exposure, proper lighting, and correct framing or composition. Those things are the expected minimums or the cut and dry issues. beyond them things become somewhat subjective, just as the do in art.

In my classes I am always quick to state that photography is an art form. Just like art, there some expected minimums that I mentioned above: focus, exposure, lighting, and correct framing or composition of the subject. Beyond the minimums we enter the area of personal personal expression. We often talk about having a photographer's eye, the use of color, and the use we make of props and our subject. All of those items have the power to enhance our photo. So the thrust of our classes is to show our students how to easy achieve those minimums or photo thresholds with their own camera.

Thanks again for steering me toward the Fuji S-8000, Barry. It looks to be a great camera.

Sarah,
I was looking at your EXIF info and noticed your ISO setting was 800, I never use "AUTO" when using flash with the s8000 because it's defaults there. :(
use "P" program mode iand you can adjust it manually. I just picked this package up on Ebay, I might keep it but might resell it if I can make more money. I think the seller undersold it. Thoughts?

Hey All,
I am finding that using SD cards seem to write to the s8000 a lot faster than the Xd and they are a lot cheaper!! I bought a few 4 GB cards a couple of weeks ago for only $19.99 a piece, great for shooting long movies and have extra room for lots of still shots at full resolution.

When he becomes a pro ball player, you'll always have those memories. I might sell my s8000, after buying the Pentax DSLR on Ebay, I figured I really don't need two similar cams, I already have a backup E-550 Fuji for shooting movies, I just needed a camera that delivers sharper pictures in low light and higher ISOs and the Pentax delivers in spades. Don't fret, I haven't made my decision yet.

Happy Easter to Everyone-

Many thanks to Barry for the headsup on the variable ISO speds the S-8000 tends to set. Varies all over the ballpark. Here is a flash photo taken in the N/flash mode. The S-8000 used ISO 400. My experience is short, with the Fuji S-8000, but I am so sure that I like this ISO variability.

They're basically the same camera except the long 18x zoom on the s8000 and the ability to shoot at 3200 and 6400 which produce crappy shots at that setting due to the small sensor (same one as the s700) The s700 also allows shooting of movies while using the zoom, something the s8000 doesn't allow. They're both great cameras for the money, just not DSLR quality as I'm quickly discovering, I would post pics of both, DC Resource has a topic just for the s700 but Byrx you knew that already :D

Bynx-

I truly think that you have made a very valid and realistic point. I realize that this statement is on its face, somewhat crude but, I truly believe that the Fuji S-8000 amounts to not much more than a blown up Fuji S-700 with IS.

'Sorry Fuji, but that is what I honestly believe. The Fuji S-8000 appears to be nothing more than the old non IS equipped Fuji S-700 that has been given a new lens (barrowed from Olympus) and pasted on to a Fuji S-700 body with a bit of new IS addded to it. If you look closely at the images from the Fuji S-8000 and know the Fuji S-700/S-5700 well, then it really not a mystery at all.

Did Fuji feel the need to get another "new" camera out there into the market place, and to accellerate the processs, they just pulled the hood over our eyes. took the Fuji S-700, and with minimal changes, produced another new camera, calle3d the Fuji S-8000. I honestly think that indeed might be the case withthe new S-800 camera from Fuji. What do you think??

Drives me nuts when manufacturers make changes just for change sake. Sometimes the end is worse than what they started with. Why cant they just make a good camera and only change it when there is truly an advancement in the technology that makes its purchase a definite plus.

New camera is doing OK, a bit heavy but I'll get used to it. BTW, got $279 for my s8000fd, so it does have great resale value, almost got as much as I paid for it (after rebate) Here's a pic of my neighbor shot at 200 ISO and the max 6mp setting.

And I have a feeling that the Image stabilization doesn't work in the camera.A washed out like final image is seen if the hands shake at minimal 2x zoom.is it normal or is the product defective?
Anyway to check it?

As I understand it, Barry moved over to the DSLR ranks. Part of that transition involved selling his Fuji S-8000 camera. I could be incorrect. Perhaps we should wait for Barry's personal response.

Look forward to seeing more of your photos down the track. :D

PS: Sarah, I really liked your Oregon Coast line shots, here and in the S700 thread, great exposure & composition. I also liked your original seagull shot too. :)

Barry, that's a great shot of your neighbour (with the K100D), although I read, in the Pentax thread, that you'll be upgrading to the K200D soon, now that's a really fine consumer dSLR! Enjoy, & I look forward to seeing some K200 shots in the Pentax thread. :D

Here are two shots for today from the Fuji S-8000 that takes advantage of the 28mm end of the lens. The first is purposefully cropped in a 16:9 format to emphasize the wide angle effect. The second photo is taken in the native 28mm format with no cropping.

Have agreat day,everyone!

Well, I landed here cause I ended up ordering a s8000fd, after browsing through all the info I could get on this site plus Steve's Digicam's, Image Resource, I could continue...
The other choice was the Panasonic FZ18. I choose the Fuji:

1. Cheaper now that they launched the S8100fd
2. AA batteries
3. No excess processing (geometry, CA), no color bleeding artifacts on shadows
4. No reddish chroma noise on skin
5. a superior dynamic range

this was the theoretical part, now comes the best one, hope to post you some pics as soon as I get it (this week).

I am perfectly aware of the sensivity limitations, I'm not expecting the results of a big CCD...

Came from a film SLR, then two Olympus. The last one took a dip, then I was forced to change, but I am quite conservative... :D

Loved to see some of the great photos you have posted.

Cheers

Antonio

OK, crops of some early trials just after unpacking, no processing, just cropping, click on the image to see it full size:

http://ajoliveira.com/images/s8000fd/t1.jpg (http://ajoliveira.com/images/s8000fd/1.jpg)
400ISO, 1/60, f2.8, 4.7(29mm) decent, good color saturation, slight purple fringing, moderate noise, full auto mode without flash, front light.

http://ajoliveira.com/images/s8000fd/t2.jpg (http://ajoliveira.com/images/s8000fd/2.jpg)
64ISO, 1/80, f3.5, 8.6(53mm) very clean, no signs of noise or purple fringing, fill-in flash, full auto mode (my grandson anyway...).

http://ajoliveira.com/images/s8000fd/t3.jpg (http://ajoliveira.com/images/s8000fd/3.jpg)
100ISO, 1/10, f5.6, 6.1(37mm) very clean, difficult subject, fluorescent lighting, aperture priority, noise visible on plain black, some signs of purple fringing, camera hand-held.

I am already enjoying it, but really, poor people relying on auto mode, you must know what you are doing with this toy and use your head before shooting. It performed exactly to expectations up to now. Watch that focus...I still must sort it out myself...

And...it work on Linux right out of the box with no software, Linux senses the camera and calls Digikam using PTP! Really user-friendly.

Take care

Antonio

Well, it is modest but still usable performance for the kind of involved job...still, noise as expected due to high iso but no purple fringing...
I published some stuff at last, check the "photo" section of http://ajoliveira.com or http://ajoliveira.org (the same).

If you want to go directly to the section, click here (http://ajoliveira.com/ajoliveira/uk/photo)

Most of the photos were made using the fixed iso mode, and mostly at 64ISO. If you care to maintain ISO between 64 and 200, minimal noise is bound to pop up. So, while you don't get your hands on the next generation of low-power high sensivity cmos sensors, extract the best out of what you have, or buy something like the samsung gx20 or pentax K20D if you have space to carry that stuff plus the optics with you, money to buy it, patience and time for raw conversions...and still, it is not really a polished thing, it is just coming, but they have turned noise reduction almost off.

By the way, who said this thread is dead? ;-)

Well, I am satisfied with S800FD, with the following exceptions:

1. On low light situations auto-focus is a problem, manual focus is another (bigger) problem, the designer of that mode was most certainly sado-masochist, and a "go to infinity" setting in manual focus mode would be a gift from heaven, at least for landscape and sky photos.

2. One has to select spot measurement for landscape with a substantial quantity of sky, the exposure algorithm is not suited to that, to avoid over-exposure. The alternative is manually compensate 1 point. So, back and forth, back and forth...

3. One has to use P mode to fix camera ISO, auto modes use unbelievably high ISOs, that most certainly accounts for the (un)popularity of this camera.

If you understand the above, the camera is usable and the quality is surprising...

well, upon reading the review of the 8000fd here on the site i figured out that there was a multi shot setting.

i am pretty excited about that and looking forward to my race this weekend to get some cool continuous shots.

wish there was more activity here, ill probably start posting in the 6000 thread

Due to being laid off I finally have the time to mess around with the camera... I'm definitely getting better with it!
