This past weekend I was shooting my kids soccer game and used auto focus. When I pushed the shutter button half way I could hear a slight arcing/cracklling sound.
Is this normal when using auto focus with the shutter button half way pressed ?
is it hard on the camera/auto focus/lens to do this ?
thanks,
bob

Were you using sports mode? Possibly this is your first experience with AF-C, the continuous autofocus. With AF-C, the camera will continually try to focus lock whenever your finger is on the shutter halfway, even if you're moving it all over the place. Nothing whatever wrong about it.
More than likely it was the VR mechanism in the lens. They tend to make strange noises in the 55-200VR.

That's true; when I tried one out at Ritz, I distinctly heard a tiny voice say "buy me". The salesgirl didn't hear it, and said I was crazy. I left.:p
That's a different noise. That's the noise of the little red NAS devil sitting on your left shoulder.
