I set the ISO to 64 for the 1st time (no more autoISO) and used a tripod. Next time I'll shoot in Aperture priority to control DOF. This image is a trampoline net that has collected some large, dry snowflakes after a storm last night. The absence of wind permitted some interesting results. Seeing individual snowflakes is fun.

The cool thing about digital is getting to play with the image through cropping, resizing, .... Any recommendations for software that does even more than Windows Picture and Fax viewer? Does the Kodak software that comes with the camera provide much functionality?

Kodak Z712IS - Not a bad little camera. It definitely has limitations - ISO's 400+ and slow shutter speeds in low light are noisy. I really like the zoom lens and am amazed at the DOF at wide apertures (as long as the focal length is not too long). Close up capability is decent. This is my 1st digital camera and I have not pulled out the film SLR since I started digital 9 months ago. Seeing instant results and having a Digital darkroom is fun too. I just discovered a cool noise suppression tool - Noiseware Community Edition (it is a free download). Check it out!

Some great shots coming out of the Zx12 series of Kodak cameras. The poor man's P850/P880. Too bad we can't hack in a RAW mode for these cameras like Canons with the CHDK hack.

sw2cam
10-21-2008, 04:51 PM
I knew when I bought these cameras that they did not shoot in raw or tiff, so I don't find it to bad. As far as the P850, not nearly as nice of a rig as any others listed above. The P880 is a good rig but it's been some time when the last one was built. So I guess if one wants to shoot in RAW or TIFF they might take a look at the Z1015is KODAK.

sw2cam - Nice capture of the Hummingbird flutter. Good choice to expose for the feeder and have the Hummer silhouette otherwise your shot might have blown out the feeder and had the Hummer exposed. Backlite shots are difficult for me too unless you have time to go for fill flash. Good job as it is.

sw2cam
11-19-2008, 03:52 PM
Yes I've noticed that ........ with all of the (40 or so) cameras I've ever owned.

I've also noticed I can take 1000's of pictures with the Z712is and not pay one extra dime to see if I like them or not. Meaning I don't have to pay for prints I do not want.

Ok and I never have the need to buy KODAK gold or any other film .... KodaChrome

Hey and another thing that I noticed is if you put the mount for your quick release tripod on your Z712is ..... you have to take it off before your able to put the camera on the dock.

dig-it-al
11-20-2008, 06:17 PM
I am wondering if the aperture set to f8 (smallest available) at widest angle could be causing the lack of sharpness. I usually shoot at ISO200, but it's time to experiment with ISO64 to see in I can get an aperture that gives better sharpness at the wide angle setting. After reading a bunch of lens reviews, I learned that the aperture can have a significant effect on lens performance (sharpness, chromatic distortion, vignetting). Perhaps there is an optimum aperture setting for this zoom lens that works for most focal settings. It's time to find out...as soon as the sun re-appears.

This photo was taken recently in Garden of the Gods Park in Colorado Springs. Numerous sandstone formations appear at crazy angles from the earth's dynamic nature. This particular formation is called Siamese Twins - this angle does not capture the reason for that name, but I liked the white lines in the rock that lead you into the image and then the rock profiles get your attention.
Captured in late afternoon with Kodak Z712IS at wide angle and f8 (smallest aperture), ISO 100, Noiseware noise reduction applied.

The Kodak Z-1012 was named by Consumer Report Magazine as the best low light level camera of 2008. To achieve this honor the camera is used in the "High ISO" position on the Mode Selector and an entirely different noise reduction algorythm is used on the photo. This allows handheld photos to be taken under normal home lighting.

Here is an example of a photo taken with the "High ISO" Mode using the Z-1012 camera.

What is the numerical value for "High ISO", 3200? If so, your example illustrates a very nice result. I am curious what shutter speed was used on that photo. I find that slow shutter speeds (< 1/2s) on the Z712IS produce a lot of noise no matter what ISO setting is used.

speaklightly

dig-it-al-
The Z-1012 used ISO 1600 F 2.8 and 1/30th of a second for the shutter speed. I really was surprised at how well it worked, especially so, when you consider that I did not use any noise reduction software like Neat Image or Noise Ninja either.

Happy Holidays!

Do you know there is a way to avoid that?

Sarah Joyce

speaklightly
12-20-2008, 06:15 PM
Take a look at this photo. You will notice that the ugly halo type shadow that we see so often in flash photos is gone We now have nice balanced lighting and a really sharp photo.

There is no ugly halo type shadow. We did it by using a simple slave flash unit. In this case we used the DigiSlave 3000 unit. A slave flash like this one can be used with any point and shoot camera that does not have a hot shoe to mount an external flash.

Sarah Joyce

speaklightly
12-20-2008, 06:19 PM
So what does the set-up we used look like and how did we adjust the flash head?

Here it is! And the flash head was left in exactly the position we used to get our no halo flash photo.

The results are nice, perhaps you want to consider using a slave flash with your point and shoot camera. It really does work.

Cool fish photos. I have never seen that 1st fish before, what is it? Tips to getting your photos sharp and colorful:
0) Don't go over ISO200 or noise will remove detail and add strange colors to dark areas.
1) Go into your menu and set color to Vivid, set to maximum sharpness
2) Edit photos in Picasa3 and at most make minor changes - sharpness and contrast are the most helpful since the camera seems to average a scene's attributes.
3) What looks good on the computer may not look as good as a print so the changes should be very minor.

I can almost hear the bees buzzing... Excellent composition and capture in tricky bright sunlight.

For anyone who might be interested, a new Kodak Z-980 Forum is getting started at www.z980fan.com. Its currently a small group, but looks to be getting larger rapidly. If you are considering the Kodak Z-980, this would be an excellent source for more info on this new Kodak Model.

The attached photo is another Kodak Z-712 photo. It was taken from our back deck and shot through a blue gel.

The Kodak Z-980 when coupled with the Kodak P-20 External Flash also seems to improve the perceived IQ. Here is a sample.

Here is a comparison of what the Kodak Z-1012 camera can do versus the new Kodak Z-980 camera. As you can see, they are pretty similar. The extra zoom, 24X optical zoom versus 12X optical zoom on the Kodak Z-1012 camera, plus the 26mm wide angle, is what makes the Kodak Z-980 what it is.

For me, with any camera, it is important for me to be able to personally select the exact focus point in my photo. With the new Kodak Z-980, when you setup the camera, it is important to select center point focusing. If you select multi-zone focusing you might end up focusing where you never intended to focus.

Please look at the attached photo. The photo on the left was focused using center point focusing. That allows me to focus exactly where I want to focus in the photo. Once I have achieved focus, I just keep holding the shutter button half way down, and if necessary, I re-frame the exactly how I want the photo to be, while maintaining my focus point.

In contrast, the photo on the right was focused using multi-zone focusing. The result it that the camera may not focus on the point you where intending for it to focus. And yep, you get a big surprise.

How you setup your camera can make a really big difference.
