View Full Version : What is the origin of your handle (user name)?

So the most/least favorite photographer thread didn't work out so well. Maybe this one will spark more action. Sorry if it has been done before.
If you care to, describe the origin or meaning of your user name. Some handles seem quite cleverly put together so it might be interesting to know what went into them. Mine is pretty simple. It's my initials - N.Q - attached to the word judo, which was my lifelong pursuit (and career for a time) till about four years ago. OK... your turn.

Many years ago I ran a Footy Tipping Comp in the office. I won the comp.
Thus.....Honest Gaza :o :D
Thereafter, it was known as Honest Gaza's Footy Tipping Comp.

Mine is a word in Scottish Gaelic, which has been a sort of pen-name/moniker of mine for a long time. The word means "white bronze" or "white gold", which was an amalgam the ancient Celts were famous for using much of, and I chose it mainly for its phonologic aesthetics, and the Celtic style and substance.
Pronouncing it correctly, though... that's another thing entirely!

You're right that's not imaginative at all! At least I added another letter and a "the" to mine. Now that's creative.

Interesting, ... I tend to fall into the DonSchap camp re usernames :o, mine is simply my middle name and the year I joined the forum, not very imaginative for sure :p, but hey it was very late at night, I was tired and I just wanted to sign up quickly to start posting to threads etc... (Sometimes I can be a little impulsive :) )
Usual sources of inspiration for usernames etc come from languages like Latin, German & Hebrew, or reading/writing or film genres like science-fiction, & I usually use something new in each new situation, but here I thought I'd go plain & simple, & I was in a hurry... :)
My password however is quite symbolic, but then I cann't share that with you can I? ... ;)

Wow. This is all very interesting so far. Thanks for all the replies. Some handles exist for reasons that are completely different than what I had imagined. Great stuff!
So with your interest in martial arts do you watch MMA?
No, I don't watch MMA. MMA guys used to come to the training center to improve their grappling skills and I always got a few MMA players sign up when I gave grappling seminars but that's about the extent of my experience with the sport. Are you a fan yourself?

Yes, I love MMA. Not too many guys can apply judo to MMA though. Karo Parisyan is the only guy that really executes no gi throws on a consistent basis.

nqjudo, I'm enjoying the replies to this question.
"Spook" comes from the cartoon character used on the rudders of our F-4 Phantom aircraft in Ubon, Thailand. The 8th TAC fighter wing was my first assignment out of aircraft weapons school in the early 70's. I tried to use my real name "Kent" as a username in the early days on the internet, but it was often already used. Spookonthe8ball always got through as being unused. I spent 4 years loading various weapons on these aircraft, so Spook kind of stayed with me. I'll attach the "Story of Spook". The picture appears at the top of the page as it appeared on our famous Phantoms.

Wesan
10-04-2007, 06:50 PM
Good idea, this thread! I've been wondering about some handles/nicknames myself. So it's nice to read the story behind your nicknames/handles. :)
The story behind mine, Wesan, is this:
I got it about 22 years ago, when I did my military service here in Sweden. I was sending and receiving messages. Each message had to be signed with my signature. The signature was made from the first three letters of my last name, which were WES. Then, one of the other guys started calling me "Wesan" because of that. He added "an" to my signature (to make it sound more like a name, or make it easier to pronounce, I guess). This was the first nickname anyone had ever given me :o and I liked it. So when I "went on the Internet" and got my first e-mail address (aside from work e-mail) and homepage (in 1997), I used the name "Wesan" on them. I have also used other names for e-mail addresses, handles/nicknames and on my homepage too. But now, I use Wesan most of the time. I like it and it's more "me", so to speak... :D
And "yes" - I still have a homepage. But it's so lousy and crappy, and I don't update that often, so I'm embarressed to show it to you. :o But if you keep asking, maybe I'll give you the address to it after all... ;)

'Screenclutter' was the name given to my Diablo II necromancer I played with that raised skeletons and animated dead monsters. Eventually, the game screen would clutter up with all my newfound allies to battle and defeat the enemies within the game.

Very interesting. I'm not very clever so I just used my first name and the country I live in.
I'm curious, how did you make a living from Judo, nqjudo? Did you own/work at a dojo?
I spent 5 years studying Karate. It was one of the best things to ever happen to me. My black belt grading was the most difficult thing I've ever been through. Lots of great memories.
My nick dates back to the times of 286 computers and computer games of these times. Back then I was just a kid and once I was playing one of these ancient games with a friend of mine. And when I was supposed to enter my name, there were just 4 spaces for letters. I didn't notice that and I tried to write "Pavel" which is my first name. But the "l" didn't fit in and so I've become "Pave"
And I use this nick ever since whenever I'm dealing with the need for some user/player name...

Back then the number one for me was the Tunneler. I used tu spend hours playing it with my friends. And some time later Scorch. I really loved that game. :)
But best games ever, s far as I am concerned are the HoMMIII and the NWN...they are both getting a bit ancient nowadays as well :)

Me too, M. My first name and last initial.
It's been a misconception that Vich is my real name. I wanted a unique and simple screen name and it popped in my head. I noticed later it was an old flame's abbrev (VickiH). Have wondered if that's a brain shadow thing - but if my wife asks I plead pure coincidence. :o
The "ich" part sounded cool from reading the "Lensman Series" when I was a teen. They were these bad-ass aliens who commanded the universe (until being destroyed by the hero in a blaze of glory).

I'm curious, how did you make a living from Judo, nqjudo? Did you own/work at a dojo?
Nick - Judo is an extremely low profile sport in Canada and the US so many people here don't know that it is the second most popular sport in the world. There are 187 affiliated nations within the International Judo Federation. I can't recall the number of players but to give you an idea, France has over 1,000,000 active players registered this year. Judo places second behind soccer, by the way.
The low profile here means that earning a living as a competitive judoka is about trying to make enough money in judo to be able to train full time without having to work elsewhere, as this would disrupt the training schedule. In most of Europe, Asia and many other places, money for judo is not a problem. There are even big endorsement deals for some players.
Being under the Olympic flag means being organized so there are coaching positions all levels. Most of the higher level coaching jobs are reserved for people that had stellar competitive careers if they wish to pursue that avenue after retirement but relatively few do.
As a competitor there are a few ways to make money. A ranked national team member can receive compensation from judo Canada but the money isn't great. In some countries where judo is extremely popular, they recruit and pay foreign judoka to fight for them. With no major corporate sponsors and a lack of funding here many Canadian judoka have fought for other federations over the past decade or so. Open tournaments where the prize is money started becoming popular during my last few years as well. 1st place purses ranged from 5 - 10k at the time. Lastly there are low level coaching jobs at local dojos and giving private lessons as a means to make some extra cash.
I spent about 25 or so years doing judo, about 10 of those years full time. At one point or another I earned money doing everything listed in the previous paragraph but I was fortunate enough in that I didn't have to chase the elusive judo dollar all that much. Montreal is home to Canada's national training center and people move here from all over to train. I was fortunate enough to live here so I didn't have to worry about paying rent like many of my teammates did.
Sorry about the long answer but I have busy fingers tonight. Hope that answers your question.

Ok, my turn. Well, you know when you try to sign up for an email account and someone already has your handle so they just stick a number after it. Well about 10 years ago, my friend wanted his email to be champ after his nickname but thought champ143 was boring so he picked qchamp. After that, the q stuck with our group of friends, qchamp, qduggers, qboyracer, and me, qmikers (mikers being my nickname). hokeyguy
11-10-2007, 06:38 AM
Mine is kind of a two fold meaning.
I used to play Quake online. Rather than have a presumptuous name like "deathdealer" or "slayer", I used hokeyguy. This way, if I got owned, I wouldn't look like an idiot. On the other hand, if I laid waste, poor "deathdealer" and "slayer" got schooled by a hokey guy.
Secondly, it's a bastardization of Hokkigai (surf clam sushi) of which I am not particularly fond, but it was always fun to say when visiting the sushi bars.

Norm in Fujino
11-23-2007, 10:34 AM
Well, what's to say? Norm in Fujino, because Norman is my given name and Fujino (Japan) is the town I live in. On some other forums I go by "Hokuto," a name given to me by an Okinawan friend back in 1972. The Japanese characters (for those who have computers that can display them) are 北人 (hoku-hito), meaning "north+person"--the original meaning of "Norman." Interestingly (?), another--and better known--derivation of Hokuto is 北斗, the name of the north star.

I guess that's it!
But my handle for almost everything else is killa frosty. And that one i can actually explain. Frosty because every day after criminal Justice, my buddies and i would stop at Wendys and all i would get is a frosty and after paintball tournaments, we'd celebrate by going to wendys and you guessed it, i'd get just a frosty.. I also liked to say "stay frosty" during scenario games. the killa part comes from the fact i had the fastest gun on the field most of the time. 22 balls per second >:D
