Hi,

I am an amateur photographer and I am looking to buy my first dSLR. In the past I have had cameras such as the Fuji Finepix 3800 that took good pictures but that had very few manual controls. I am thinking about becoming a serious amateur nature photographer,an amateur mind you, not a pro. Because of this aspiration, I want a camera that has the manual controls such as apeture, shutter speed and ISOe that I need to take great pictures. Also, the image should be good enough to make prints larger than 8 x 10. I've read about the Nikon D 70 and it seems like a great camera, but the Cannon EOS 20D is also great, but kindof pricy. Another thing is that I want this camera to be like a building block, so the next camera I get will take all of the lenses and accessories I buy. I've heard that both Nikon and Cannon make great cameras but I'm not sure where to start. I know this is a lot to ask for but they are all spinning in my head. Any suggestions would be very helpfull. Thanks!

Nature photographer = need for long lenses

Long lenses are better with image stabilization.

That would lead you to Canon rather than Nikon. You might think about going for the much less expensive Canon Digital Rebel body for now, and using the $$$ saved over the 20D for a Canon IS long zoom lens.
