Canon EOS 10D vs. 30D

My Canon EOS 10D started giving me error 02 messages and I sent it to Canon for repair. It'll cost $305 to get it fixed. The Canon folks suggest I look at putting the money towards a newer model -- the EOS 30D (they claim it'll be cheaper now due to release of the 40D).

What are some opinions on the 30D? I think I can afford one and it seems wiser to get this for $150 more than the repair cost.

I'd really appreciate your opinions.

Image quality, capture speed, ISO performance, processing speed, screen, viewfinder, battery, and etc are all better.
It is totally worth it!

I found 2 ads on the web, one from bestpricecameras.com and the other from USAPhotoNation.com who both offered the EOS 30D body for $449. My wife called them today and both said these were overseas market models. USAPhotoNation.com said the camera was a plastic body with no battery, charger or strap. bestpricecameras.com said that the body was metal alloy. Still not sure if the battery from my 10D would fit or not (let me know).

Anyway, are these deals real? And, with my 10D giving me the 02 error, I am having it returned from Canon to try to play with memory cards. Any other suggestions would be great.

Somehow, the FBI seems uninterested in pursuing crooks like these. They leave it up to the buyer to beware based on actual rip-off experiences.

If it's too good to be true, then it probably is. $450 is WELL under even the 1 year old used resale value of a good working 30D.

If you want to go middle-road, you can probably get a used 20D for about $600. I don't think the 40D has quite had it's impact on the predescesor pricing yet.

NormanCamera, CanogaCamera, BeachCamera, and BHPhotoVideo are all reputable (Beach may be guilty of being over-agressive but they aren't rip-offs either).

bestpricecameras and photonation both appear to be fraud sites. Steer well clear there have been tremendous horror stories.

Go to B&H instead.

I just checked this site and was AMAZED! I also found the other supplier at http://www.resellerratings.com/store/Best_Price_Cameras_6 on the site -- and it isn't any better. Guess I will have to rethink my direction. THANKS!!!

I assume you saw my post about my daughter's broken Olympus Stylus 3oo. Yes, it is raining and pouring in busted camera's at my home. I will never get one of these without coverage or plans to buy again. My professional film cameras are still clicking along after 30 years. Guess the toys bring some risk.

Well, film cameras tend to see fewer clicks than digicams inside a period of time - because with film you're limited to 20-36 shots before changing film. I often rack up fifty shots with no real pause. Digital cameras have made us a wee bit triggerhappy.

As for online buying, I do this: go to Amazon.com and find it. Amazon often has near the best legitimate deal on a camera. Other places may have something to recommend them in a given situation, like free memory cards and what-not, but use the Amazon price to gauge the reliability of what you find. If it's significantly cheaper, it's just not likely to be genuine.

I believe the 10D also uses the BP 511 (same as 30D).

Head over to fredmiranda forums, they seem to have a TON of 20Ds for around USD$550 shipped and paypal'd. I've also seen 30Ds go for USD$650 shipped.

Coming from a 10D, I doubt the OP would be interested in a 300D. B&H does have new 30D's, though for $999.
