I'm looking at these hoya filters:
http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/408014-REG/Hoya_GIK58GB_58_mm_Introductory_Filter.html
but i don't know if they are multi-coated or not. I'm new to using filters and such, so I don't know how necessary it is to have multi-coated filters (or lenses for that matter).
Thanks for helping out a newb in need.

I'm not positive, but I don't think the kits have HMC.

If you open that item and go to the specifications tab, it specifically says they are not multi-coated. $55 for three filters is dirt cheap, and there is truth to the saying that you get what you pay for. B+W charges about $75 for just the polarizer, but it's a good filter. It's still not multi-coated.
The multi-coated version is $99. What the multi-coating does is reduce reflections so you get less flare and ghosting. Since filters are a huge contributer to flare and ghosting, you do the math. Me, I buy the best and cry once.

Me, I buy the best and cry once.
I did that with my Hoya Circular Polarizer. Ran something like $140 for the thing. I cried...
Then I accidentally dropped the lens it was mounted to, and the lens cap cracked the outer glass on the filter...
I cried again...:(
Filters - the plusses...
They can protect the front element from damage. Cheaper to replace a $200 filter than a $500 lens.
Super Multicoated and Digital multicoated can improve the performance of a lens.
The minuses....
cheap filters degrade optical quality
for the price of two good filters you could buy a new lens
Filters have no resale value.
uncoated filters can cause more problems than they solve.
Given that you have selected a 58mm filter, I'd say you're thinking of putting it on the kit lens. Save your money and buy a better lens instead.
A digital multicoated filter is better but more expensive than super multicoated but super multicoated is excellent. In terms of brands...
Hoya is good.
B+W is very good
Tiffin, soligor, quantaray (tiffin) etc are cheap junk.
