Coolpix 950

Need help in purchasing a new digital camera. I bought the Nikon Coolpix 950 several years ago and need to update. Should we stick with Nikon or is there a better choice out there. Looking for compact, 4-5 megapixel, sharp,clear pictures that I can point and shoot, short lag time between pictures and while taking pictures. Would like to stay around $500. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
