I'm using a 430ex flash with a 10d DSLR, and sometimes I find that the ETTL indicator on the flash LCD disappears, to be replaced by just 'TTL'. It comes back on its own eventually, but I don't know what causes this. What are the known causes of this? Dirty hotshoe connection, or is my flash/camera defective?

Hi,

Your hotshoe contacts can be dirty or slightly corroded. Get a pencil with an abrasive eraser then "erase" the contacts at both the flash and the camera. Make sure you blow away any of the eraser dirt that shows before trying it on again.

Another possible reason is that the springs on the flash contacts are stiff. Push them with your finger to make sure that they are retracting and going back flawlessly.

Your hotshoe mount can also be loose. Mount the flash on the camera and check if the flash is wiggling. If it is (although I doubt if this is the cause), then try to devise some ways in making it tight.

Lastly, if all my suggestions didn't work, try resetting the flash and the camera.

If none really worked, hmmm, try to ask in the proper forum here (http://www.dcresource.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=11) where DSLRs are the topic.
