UV Filter for FZ8

I'd like to put a UV filter on my new FZ8's lens to protect it. I purchased a 52mm, but it's too small, despite the fact that many filter dealers say it's the right size for this camera. Do I need a 53mm, or do I need a special filter or filter adapter from Panasonic? I tried to figure this out from the camera manual and many web other camera sites without success. I appreciate your help!

The 52mm filter fits onto the lens adapter that comes with the camera* which in turn fits on the lens. The adapter provides the clearance for the lens to zoom in and out.
