what flash unit model?
Is your camera set to use flash or auto flash?
Will it go off if you fire it alone with a test button?
Does it power on?

I suspect you have a flash model that is not compatible with the XTi. I have now or had 5 Canon film cameras including lates EOS Elan. I also have 6 flashes of various brands including Canon. All of the flashes were usable with all the Canon cameras until I got a XTi. None (including the Canon) are totally usable with the XTi. Some features are but none of the auto features are. Some won't even work on manual. I was a little disappointed but the XTi manual states that only the new EX model flashes are completely usable. I have several Sunpacks that are good flashes but I don't know if they have a unit available that works with the XTi yet or not. Be carefull about using any flash that are not designed for the XTi. The hot shoe circuitry
on these electronic cameras is very sensitive. I zapped 2 EOS film cameras using pro handle
mount and studio power packs before I found out. By the way you can purchase a hot shoe
mount "go between" unit made by Wein that reduces the syn voltage so you can use with
high voltage power pack units.

what andyjack said. stop using it until you know it's compatible because you can fry your camera. if you really need to experiment, get a wein safe sync.

I was using a Sunpak 383 Auto on the XTi and it worked ok.....but have now replaced with a Canon 430ex.
