Newbie here who just got a nice new FZ20 for Christmas. Is there much of a difference between all the various makes and models of tripods for this camera? Does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks.

This is only my opinion because

People want different things from a tripod
Height ---- weight ---- How much it will support ------ and smoothness ... and do you want a Quick release plate?

If you are a backpacker size and weight are most important and to get a good tripod with those restrictions can be very expensive. Check out the Gitzo line.

If that is not a concern and you can afford $200.00 you can get a very good tripod and head. This is a good line.

But most everyone buys a $50 tripod only to wish they had got a better one.

Maybe this page will help you

I bought a Sunpak 6400UT from Best Buy for $52 and love it. It is eye level for me at 6 feet, comes with levels, quick release and it very light for someone on the move like me.

I have a Quantaray QSX 9001, my parents bought me one for Christmas. It has the usual stuff like quick release, levels, what-not. Its weights only 3 lbs and its really sturdy. Was like $60, I think.

Me too! :D

I'm quite new to photography so since I don't want to shell out loads of cash for accessories I ordered a tripod from eBuyer.com for £7. Quick find code is 65561 and the description as follows;

The ebuyer 53" Tripod has a built-in smooth-moving 3 way head in cast aluminium suitable for use with small video cameras as well as with photographic equipment. The head has separate pan and tilt locks, a quick release camera plate and with a short pan/tilt bar for more ergonomic use, particularly while panning or tracking moving subjects. The leg pivot system uses a unique single hinge design in aluminium which both keeps the cross section smaller and allows the leg to fold shorter than conventional tripods. The spirit level allows you to set up perfectly horzontal shots.
The tripod is built with "D" profile tubular legs for extra torsional rigidity and quick flip leg locks for ease and speed of set-up. A quick action lever also blocks the reversible center column extension. Comes complete with a carrying bag with twin shoulder strap for easy carrying. Head movements: PAN 360° / TILT +90° -75° / LEVEL +90° -0°.

I reckon it'll work a treat for getting started, I'll let you know when it arrives. How bad can it be for seven quid!
