anyone have any experience with them ? do you recommend or not ? anything to look out for ? how do they work and do they work well ?

i'm looking to step down a 77mm filter to 72mm.

Did you mean step up rings? If you're wanting to make a lens with a 72mm filter size use your 77mm filter then it's a step up ring. I use a 52-62mm step up ring on my 50mm lens to use my 62mm filters and they work fine. Just a bit of a pain having to take it off after use, or buying larger lens caps for the new size filter.

I had a 105mm polarizing filter and used it with stepdown rings on lots of 77mm and 82mm lenses.
I never had any problems with vignetting.
The filters screwed on and gradually tapered to the appropriate size.
Since you are doing a very small stepdown, I wouldn't imagine any problems.
