There are so many cameras out there. What are the differences between these two camers? Will the XTi take photo's in a low light situation in a gym (volleyball)? I know the D40 will using either a EF 85mm or a EF 50mm. Unfortunetly the budget is dictating the everything at this point.

The XTi has a limit of 1600 ISO. Pretty common maximum ISO on most camera bodies.
The 30D is capable on an extended ISO 3200, which is 1/2 stop more light.
A big difference? Not really, but a difference, none-the-less.
Your lens is the real difference in most shots, not the body ... unless you need 1/8000th shutter speed. Most cameras have it covered to 1/4000th ... and even that's guess work in most.
The biggest difference between the two cameras you will quickly appreciate is sheer size. The XTi was made for smaller hands. If you have a pair of mitts on ya, then the EOS 30D should be a better grab.
The XTi has a bigger sensor at 10.1 MP ... where the 30D has an 8.2 MP.
Does this make for a real difference in images? Not really. You'd need a 40% bigger sensor to appreciate any real difference in resolutions for blow-ups. You biggest being 8"x10" ... not an issue.
The 30D is a little better at noise handling over the XTi. Now, that could be the camel-buster.
