Few snapshots to share. It was his Stag and Doe party. One of the games was a lottery, the winner got to pie Matt (the groom) in the face. Fun times!

#1 He put the cake through the chocolate fountain.

Why does marriage make people do such odd things?

Griptape, it only odder from here.... This is just the beginning!

Great shots Nick. Good thinking to use the flash and slow shutter together. It makes these very lively!

Thanks everyone. I must admit though the slow SS was a mistake! :D Turned out okay though.

next time I forget to adjust my SS I'll remember to do that! :p jk I agree with ya. I like the expression on his face though. Oh well, it was just a snap shot I didn't put much thought into it.

completely OT: My aunt is getting married and asked me to take the pictures... maybe I will get that 40D after all. I was really thinking of buying a lighting kit but I think maybe a 40D, 580 EX II, and a 85mm 1.8 would add nicely to my current kit. That way I could have the 35mm and 430ex on the XT and the 85mm and 580 on the 40D. I could even buy a stand and umbrella and make a quick and dirty portable portrait kit out of the 430ex and the 580ex.

Fun pics Nick!

AFAIK the only way to trigger Canon Speedlites off camera is with the Canon wireless transmitter ST-E2. I've tried an optical slave and a PC terminal hot shoe adapter (to use with my wireless eBay RF slave) on my 430EX and no go (assuming same with 580EX.)

On the other hand, the Sunpak 383 (which is a fairly powerful flash) works great off camera with a cheap optical slave (you'll need to use your 430EX on-camera in manual mode to avoid the pre-flash to trigger the optical slave - built-in flash won't work b/c of the pre-flash) or a PC adapter and a an RF wireless setup. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/52799-REG/Sunpak_0383_383_Super_Auto_Flash.html However, you lose ETTL metering if you use a 383 on-camera - manual mode only. But it's a great quck and dirty portable portrait setup.

Hmmm, that sounds like a very good alternative! There will only be about 9 people there! very small thing held in a dinning room of a restaurant. I'm thinking of taking the group shots outside if there is a suitable spot for it!

So I'm thinking 430 ex on camera, 383 on stand w/umbrella (camera Left), assistant holding reflector (camera right). That should provide some lighting flexibility along with some safe even lighting.

Quick question though, this is an excerpt from the "features" info from B&H:

Add the optional battery pack and an optical slave, and you'll have a great second light for speedy, powerful background room illumination to go with your TTL system upon your camera(choose a "digital" optical slave is triggering the 383 Super off-camera from a preflash-emitting TTL system from Canon, Metz Nikon, Olympus, Pentax, Sony, etc).

What does that last part mean? If you buy a "digital" optical slave you can retain TTL metering? Very poor word usage.

No - it just basically means you can use your 430EX in auto mode (with full eTTL metering) instead of having to use manual mode to avoid the pre-flash. All a "digital" optical slave does is ignore the pre-flash. I tried a couple of the digital optical slaves but didn't find any that worked reliably. So I got a cheap optical slave.

The battery pack option might be important depending on what/who you're shooting since the recycle times on the 383 are only average. Shooting babies I sometimes find 383 isn't fast enough on the recycle (even with NiMH batteries). My solution is to use the flash at 1/2 power or less and bump the ISO on my camera to 200. That's the only downside to using the 383 I think.
