View Full Version : How Much Weight Should the Neck Strap Carry at Most?

I was wondering about if there are any figures on how much weight I shouldn't go beyond with the neck strap that comes with the Canon 400D. I fear that one of those clips could break it out one day if I had put more on it than I should.
On average, I don't put on it more than 4 lbs (2 kgs). The camera is about 1 lb, the lenses I have are too, and so is the 430ex.
Do you guys put this in mind? Did you come to unfortunately break the strap, or heard of that happening?

I suspect you'll injure your neck before you break a strap (even the one Canon supplies.) Canon's been making (D)SLR's, Speedlites and "L" lenses for a long time now and probably have a pretty good handle on how much weight their straps need to support.
That being said, I've been using one of these for comfort and quick release: http://www.adorama.com/OTPLSBK.html

The strap that comes with the camera is made similarly to a seat belt. I would imagine it would hold several hundred pounds (/me goes to try and pick up my refrigerator with my neck strap).

on a related note, i recommend optech straps (about $20) over the oem one. they're much more comfortable.
I would worry more about your neck than the strap. Having said that, I would also be more concerned not with the weight on the strap but with the weight on the camera lugs that the strap is attached to. They're just screwed into the plastic body with nothing substantial behind them.

Hmmm... great idea! Glad I thought of it! ;)
