I am looking for a digital camera that takes good photo's in a school gym (volleyball & basketball). Flashes are NOT allowed. If the EOS 10D is not suited for this, what camera is?

It does depend on what lens you put on it, to which extent it is suited.

SONY is releasing a new camera capable of ISO-6400. Indoors, this could solve some issues, despite the lens' maximum aperture. If you use a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens at f/2.8 and ISO-6400 ... you just might be able to 'freeze the action' at 1/125th of a second and get a decent shot, also.

That's a full f-stop faster than ISO-1600 (which is the usual ISO-maximum on most APS-C camera bodies.) When you don't have light, you have to grab what you can.

This solution is certainly going to be a lot cheaper than the EF 200mm f/1.8L USM lens ($4500, if you can find one), that's for sure.

I don't mean to be rude here, but is there a reason you're looking at a camera that's 4 years old and has been replaced 3 times over? If money is the issue (and you have your herat set on Canon because as Don pointed out there are plenty other options) you might be better suited with a 20D, a camera much better suited to your needs.

That's what I was thinking, too.

I am just trying to figure out what camera would be best. DSLR cameras are something that I have zero experience with. With twin girls who are into sports, money is kind of a factor. But I don't want to miss these years. What camera's would you suggest? I'm not stuck on any particular brand.

Why did you mention the 10D? What price was in your head when you asked that?

Best would be a Canon EOS 20D with Canon EF 85mm f1.8 lens, to shoot low light without flash on a budget.

I'm reluctant to purchase a camera without knowing if I will be able to take photo's in the enviroment that I want. I had access to a 10D and was going to try it out. That is why I was asking about it.

The 10D was Canon's first attempt with the APS-C sensor. It was a start ... and then the story really took off in the EOS 20D. If you want a good Canon to work with, I echo the sentiment to start with a refurbished 20D. It will handle any Canon EF, EF-S or third-party Canon EF mount lens you put on it, where the 10D could NOT do EF-S lenses.

In fact, I'll sell you mine ... if you want it. It is in great condition, it works ... but it will be understood, it goes "AS IS."

Go ahead and try the 10D with the best lens you can round up ... and shoot! Post the best you got ... then we can critique it and try and provide some assistance on improvement settings and conditions ... but, you need a good platform to begin with ... the 20D can be that.

What kind of a price are we talking about and is the lens included?

Lenses ... okay ... when it comes to lenses, they are FULL price ... whatever they are, so I can give you no deal there, except for the convenience of sending them with the camera, okay?

My lens list is rather long ... and you can find it in my signature ... by clicking on the link ... which takes you to a POTN web page. I'll sell the lens for the normal cost you'll find on the B&H Photo price list. I figure that's fair. No discounts, though ... the full price. Glass rarely discounts.

Good luck and take a long look. It's all in great shape and maintained.

We'll talk camera price, later ... and off-line. You'll come out quite well. ;)
