Budget: $500 (give or take $100)
Size: Preferably a compact but willing to look at others.

I'm an active track athlete and love taking pictures of my teammates and other athletes running. I want good quality pictures but they don't have to be amazing. Good enough to keep them from looking blurred. I'd also like a short shutter lag if possible. I don't know much about cameras but am willing to learn about manual controls if necessary.

Most pictures will be outside but occasionally there will be indoor shots. Also because I can't get up close to some events, I'd like some kind of zoom. (I'm not expecting too much for a zoom)

I want a compact (or if possible Ultra-Compact) because it's easier to carry around and takes up less space. But I can adjust to whatever I have too.

I was looking at the Nikon 40D and the Canon S3 IS but the biggest draw backs are their size. Just a little bigger then I want.

I'm open to all brands and models and any suggestions about what to look for would be greatly appreciated.

After a bit more research and reading reviews I've narrowed it down to a
Ricoh Caplio R6
or
Canon Powershot A710 IS

I've read great reviews about both and they have slight differences in pro's and con's. What are your opinions on these two cameras. Any alternative options?

The Canon A-710IS is an excellent camera but it is becoming rather difficult to find because it has been replaced by the new Canon A-720IS. Amazon has a $249.95 price on the A-720IS right now.
