Miscellaneous

Are there particular brands you like or hate?

no. I used to have a Canon A560 which became damaged. I never really liked the camera and found it to be very very slow. I want a camera where I can many pictures in a row quickly and not take so long to "recover" after each shot.

Are there particular models you already have in mind?

canon SD850 pr Sony W series

(If applicable) Do you need any of the following special features? (Wide Angle, Image Stabilization, Weatherproof, Hotshoe, Rotating LCD)

a rotating LCD would be nice but not necessary

The Canon A630 is pretty nice for under $200. It does not have image stabilization, but has the rotating LCD and a 4X zoom.

The A710IS or similar has a couple extra X in the lens, image stabilization, but no rotater...

SD850 is nice, but also look at the Panasonic FX30, which is much the same camera for much less.

Even though I'm a big fan of DSLR's, I used one over my 2 week trip and got great results with it.

If you want to take many images quickly you should look into using the Burst/Continuous mode. The A560 actually has a pretty good burst mode, but that is moot now. It's mainly for shooting action shots, but it comes in handy in all sorts of situations.

The Sony W80 has an excellent burst mode.

I like my Panasonic DMC-TZ3. It's very small, 10x optical zoom and takes great pictures.
