View Full Version : Anyone have Eclipse shots?

I rolled out of bed at 2:30AM and pointed my 300mm moon-ward. Even broke out the tripod.

Can't say I downloaded any yet - later. Just wondering if anyone else got any? I'll post a couple tonight.

RE: Dynamic Range.
My LCD showed a very different picture than what I saw. Trying different f-settings (f4 to f16) and different exposures didn't change the fact that the bright part was never the same size as what my eyes saw.

If I decreased exposure; the bright part (portion not yet eclipsed) was the right size, but the rest was dark. My naked eye could clearly see the rest of the moon.

As I increased exposure, the dark part was now approximating what my naked eye saw but the bright part (portion not yet eclipsed) was blown out and much bigger.

So I started yammering to my wife how "the new camera out has more dynamic range, and would do a far better job with this contrast".

I'd love to show her some proof - or at least get concurrence.

After having to wake back up at 2:30AM, I'll be happy if I did anything right. I most likely left the camera at 1600 ISO. I'll look around for the thread you mentioned, thanks.

i know its not great- but hey, it was 4:30 in the morning. anyways, taken with my d50 and my 55-200mm at 1 second f/10. i was having some trouble focusing, because there was so little light to focus on. it was taken at iso 1600. this has been cropped alot- so it may be a little low quality. i tried using my tele-converters and a my really old mirror lens(like 1000mm or somethin f/10), but the shutter speed was too low for how fast the moon was moving- so i had to use my 55-200 for the best aperture possible(f/5.6)

I've never photographed the moon at night before. Wow, it moves fast. 300mm, ISO 200, f9. I had no idea you need the same shutter speeds as a group of people dancing! (1/125)

So; I took 30 shots, nearly all at 1 second or slower. Also; exposure was difficult. To boot; I went to bed and didn't realize the best shots would be when it was all dark.

Cheers Tim. Nice shot!

Sadly; this is my best photo.

This is what it looks like on a tripod at 1.6 seconds - and therefore a lot what all my shots are like (many worse).
